Iris Scanning For New Jersey Grade School
Snip....

When a parent arrives to pick up their child at one of three grade schools in the Freehold Borough School District, they'll need to look into a camera that will take a digital image of their iris. That photo will establish positive identification to gain entrance into the school.

snip...

"The idea is to improve school safety for the children," said Phil Meara, superintendent, Freehold Borough School District, on Monday. "We had a swipe-card system that operated the doors, but the technology was obsolete."

Snip...

Parents who have children that attend any of the three schools in the district, teachers who instruct students attending classes at the locations, and staff employees are assigned access rights. Each child can have up to four adults approved in the system.

4. It's kinda nice that people have such faith in tech, but I have found
biometrics to not work very well in the day-to-day. My laptop takes more than several swipes before recognizing my fingerprint, and when testing an iris scanner a friend of mine had set up in her lab, it got confused between my eye with and without my contacts. Nice idea, but maybe too much faith in tech.

5. This wouldn't have worked for me...
When I was in grade school I would have needed my parents, both sets of grandparents, an uncle and a couple of neighbors scanned into their little system.

9. Gee, this sounds like a cash cow for somebody
And another chance to soak the taxpayers, all in the name of "the children" I'm sorry, but this is a waste of money. I realize that schools have gotten larger these days, and that the administrative staff can't know each parent on an individual basis, though they should, but damn. A swipe card system isn't enough?

This hyperization of security is absolutely appalling. It overprotects the children, probably to the point of detriment to their long term development, and it is intrusive as hell. Besides, what the hell are these schools going to do when the power goes out, or the computer crashes?

This is utterly ridiculous, and a waste of good money that could be spent *gasp* educating out children. :banghead:

11. And when was the last child abducted by some random stranger from
school? Or did I miss that memo?

Reminder, people.... most children who are abducted are taken by the non-custodial parent and the reason they aren't found is because they're happy to be with the parent who took them, or at least happy enough.

It's not likely to help much - especially if custodial parent forgets that noncustodial parent is listed as a contact for child.
