FoxNews this a.m.: Promoting corporal punishment in Middle Schools |
|
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 09:58 AM by elehhhhna
Did anybody catch it? Around 6:20 CDT The Torture lovers TV Network, Fox, featured a peppy lightnews story about the SUCCESS of paddling TEENAGERS in US public HS's -- complete with a live DEMONSTRATION.
Highights: a large African American male Principal wacking a tall, approx. 14 y/o af-am male student on the ASS with a 24 inch wood paddle. A female adult and student were also on the panel but the segment ran long so no spanky for HER on live TV this morning. Darn.
The point; Parents "like it"! They "request it, instead of suspensions!" The students like it too! They "ask for it" in lieu of other punishment...". "Please please, spank me, Mister JohnMarkCarr PrinciPAL! I HATE in-school detention."
In other words, it's FANTASTIC! A miraclous discovery! It's the answer to all our problems! It's evidently most super-effective on africanamerican students, btw.
Next up: "Waterboarding High School Troublemakers" ?
Passage of the "Yo Child's Behind is Mine" Act?
What the f...?

2. I was beaten in a boys' school for a couple of years... |
|
Hundreds of strokes over that time for disrupting study hall, not wearing my uniform, and so forth. Never discouraged me a bit.

4. Of course students like it |
|
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 10:01 AM by Hippo_Tron
I'd go get my ass paddled for 2 minutes over spending an hour or two in detention or getting suspended from school. And of course parents like it over suspensions. It won't go on thier kid's record like a suspension will. Doesn't mean that the kid actually learns anything other than that it's okay to hit others.

16. yeah, some of these teachers might be into S&M |
|
It might be a turn on to smack--that can be used against punishment. How about the teacher who smacked the boys and made the girls rub his shoulders? Where are the parents on that one? He'd be out on his ear.
I have a friend who teaches elementary school--boys and girls--they make up a symbol of greeting and the class does a sort of "code of the warrior." The class then becomes a cohesive group with no picking on each other. For punishment, he gives physical exercise, as he figures the student usually needs to get rid of excess physical energy. Every student wanted to be in his class. His method taught the students respect and belonging. He didn't need to spank to get results. I'd say some teachers have no creativity, if they have to resort to pain to maintain a classroom.

8. I briefly attended a public middle school that had corporal punishment |
|
I thought it was disgusting. Luckily, I never had to undergo this medieval form of discipline.
Typical punishments included an option of three swats or an hour of detention. The Asst. Principle kept a wooden paddle (with a few holes drilled in it) behind his desk. I only attended this hell-hole small town school for a few months. I thought these people were absolutely fucking nuts.
Corporal punishment is something I feel should only be administered by parents. Administration by school personnel is just wrong.
I do, however, approve of beating the shit out of FAUX News talking heads with paddles.

10. I had a science teacher in jr high who hit boys with paddles |
|
But not girls. He tried to get us to rub his neck. I refused and got a B instead of the A I earned. What I learned was that my parents weren't going to protect me from jerks like this, so I had to take my B and keep my pride this time. The next time I dealt with a teacher like that was when I was in college, and I got my A (that I earned) by threatening him with a lawsuit/the ombudsman/losing his pension.
Boys got their choice of 3 paddles, before he hit them. There was a long, frat-style paddle; a ping-pong-like one; and a ping-pong one with holes in it, that allegedly hurt the most.
The teacher is not teaching anymore. His name is Ken Skar and he lives in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area, last I checked. I hope he's never allowed near kids again.

9. Sick and Twisted - The Republican Way! Have seen it often! |
|
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 10:37 AM by TornadoTN
I'm 27, so not too terribly removed from the school age set. I was never paddled personally, however, I remember the kids that did would always laugh about the paddlings that they recieved. The way they saw it, they didn't have to do extra work, go to detention or be suspended (which would piss their parents off). It was the best way to get out of anything they ever did wrong in school. The Principal was a lady that always seemed to enjoy these things a little too much. In recent years, she was fired for strip searching female students against policy and without witness and then paddling them, bare-assed. Oh, and she was a big Republican! Coincidence?
Corporal Punishment is still used here in the area school systems due to parental input. Of course, when the local news looked into this a little further, they found that parents wanted this as an option because suspension or detention impacted their own schedules too much, so they wanted the quick and easy way out - the way that had the least impact on their own lives. So much for caring and nurturing parents concerned with the education and well-being of their child.
My child will never be punished in this manner. It's archaic and does nothing more than provide kids with the idea that when something wrongs them, they should exact their revenge in this same manner while learning or sacrificing nothing. Force is a last resort, never the first.

11. Strangers hitting MY KIDS?? No fucking way. |
|
Sorry but strangers will not be striking my children without retribution, legal retribution of course. I do not use corporal punishment. My kids have learned that there are consequeces to their words and deeds in other ways.

13. We have a 16 month old |
|
And he will NEVER be subjected to corporal punishment at home and definately not at school. Teaching kids right from wrong and setting an example is the best way to deal with behavior problems before they even start, and when they do start, knowing that there are lasting consequences to their actions is enough of a deterrent if taught by caring & dedicated parents.

17. We had a crazy neighbor guy who spanked my bro (then about 5) |
|
for stepping on his grass. My Mom had a fit.
When Dad came home from work, he marched out to middle of the guy's front yard, loudly called him outside, and said "If you ever touch one of my kids again I'll spank your bare ass in the middle of the street!"
He meant it. Problem solved.

12. Absolutely not my kid! |
|
When I was in the sixth grade I got swats over something really stupid. My mother is RW fundie and all, but when she heard that someone did that to her kid, she went ballistic. The principal and vice-principal were almost sued over it. She forced them to put together parental consent forms for all parents.

14. when I was in elementary school |
|
we had a male substitue teacher who loved to paddle. We had a "whipping boy" who always got into trouble, even if he didn't do it. I remember the teacher having him bend over and face the class-his face would turn red from the whipping, but he'd still have this big smile on his face. I felt guilty, because about four of us (him included), snuck into class at recess, took the paddle and threw it in an irrigation ditch--the teacher made the whole class look for it-when he found it, he blamed Johnny. No teacher every touched my kids--of course, most of my children's teachers were good teachers and didn't need to use such punishment to maintain a class.

15. My husband had an argument with the principal of a rural high school |
|
about paddling one of his patients, a teenager in foster care with a history of physical abuse. The principal didn't understand why hitting this kid might not be the best approach to discipline. My husband said the principal really saw it as a power issue - this was "his" high school, "he" was in charge, and he would damn well do as he pleased.
Paddling isn't about discipline, it's about power assertion.
