The Religious Right Says "Shop At Walmart" |
|
I just came across this story on Media matters, but it seems relevant as we go into the holiday season. Again, the hypocrisy of the Religious Right simply knows no bounds Perhaps we're not too far removed from the day that Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, etc. drop the pretence and start wearing badges from their sponsors ala NASCAR. If Jesus were alive today, would he accept an endorsement deal? Would he say, "Shop at Walmart?"
"Nonetheless, on the December 14 edition of the Christian Broadcasting Network's The 700 Club, a substantial portion of which was devoted to the so-called "war against Christmas," Robertson advocated shopping at Wal-Mart instead of Target because Target "is banning the wonderful work of the Salvation Army:"
I think Wal-Mart is a great store that sells things at a low price, and they can match Target on almost everything. So why should you stop at a store that is banning the wonderful work of the Salvation Army with those kettles that raise money to feed the poor and the needy? They do great work and they've never had one breath of scandal in all the time they've been around. They are a tremendous organization. And this is going to cost them something in the neighborhood of nine or ten million dollars. So maybe you could take that out of Target's hide and give it to Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart allows the Salvation Army to put out those kettles. So keep that in mind when you do your Christmas shopping, please?
In his December 11 nationally syndicated column titled "The impending death of Christmas?" Falwell noted that "ther anti-Christmas strategies have gained headlines recently," citing as an example that "TARGET will not allow the Salvation Army to collect funds at their stores, meaning that the Army will lost about $9 million this year."

that underpays its employees, does not allow unionizing, outsource much of its stock, and contributes millions of dollars to Republican campaigns, and just about nothing at all to Democrats.
The Salvation Army discriminates against gays and anyone else it wants to. I don't support them any more either.
If members of the Christian Right want to shop there, they're free to do so. But I haven't been inside one for years now, and can't imagine when I'll ever be inside one again.

6. Irony - Where is the Christianity In The Christian Right? |
|
The irony of the Christian right complaining about taking Christmas message out of the holidays is the fact that their messages are so non-Christian.
Endorsing Walmart, calling for the death of World Leaders, suggesting that 9/11 is God's punishment, comparing Hillary Clinton with the devil, does not strike me as particularly Christian.
I think it is contemptible how the Republican party and the Christian Leadership actively use their power to undermine the welfare of their own constituents, particularly in the South. Rather than following the example of Jesus, thier policies seem to follow the example of Judas by betraying the interests of their followers, if not actively threatening their followers with spirirual retribution for not supporting their agenda.

I've been away for a bit, and just came back. Now I'm hit with Walmart ads on DU.
The world in which I live is certainly a strange, dark, and confusing place, overrun with disturbing images and scented with the slight odor of decay. Kind of like my teenage son's bedroom.
