Fox had Foley emails, chose not to run
10/03/2006 @ 1:54 pm
Filed by RAW STORY

Fox News had copies of emails written from Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) to a Louisiana boy, but chose not to run the story, according to a passage in an Associated Press report.

The relevant excerpt follows:

The FBI has begun an inquiry into Foley's computer contact with pages, and Hastert wrote a letter to Florida Gov. Jeb Bush asking for an investigation into whether state laws were broken.

Meanwhile, Florida newspapers — who were leaked copies of the e-mail with the Louisiana boy last year — defended their decision not to run stories. Both The St. Petersburg Times and The Miami Herald were given copies of the e-mail, as were other news organizations, including Fox News.

"Our decision at the time was ... that because the language was not sexually explicit and was subject to interpretation, from innocuous to 'sick,' as the page characterized it, to be cautious," said Tom Fiedler, executive editor of the Herald. "Given the potentially devastating impact that a false suggestion of pedophilia could have on anyone, not to mention a congressman known to be gay, and lacking any corroborating information, we chose not to do a story."

8. Once more, the Web forces the MSM to tell the truth.
ABC (and who knows who else?) deliberately sat on this story for as long as it could, and probably would never have mentioned it except for the fact that the accusations against Foley started appearing on the Web -- as was the accusation that the media already knew about this story and was hiding it.

Without the Web story, there would be no ABC story.

These days, without the Web, there would be almost no 'journalism' at all.

Thank God for the amatuers who show the professionals how to be professionals.

3. Put a "D" next to Foley's name and Faux would have
interrupted regular programming for indepth wall to wall coverage.. Hannity would have been dispatched posthaste.

31. And they DID put a "D" after his name!
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2303322

They deliberately misidentified him as Foley (D-FL) to make stupid people think he was a Dem.

14. More of the 'open secret" kind of knowledge. Foley was "outraged"
at the "slurs" (people saying he was gay) that were raised when he ran for the Senate. (I think he'd been "outed" by the Advocate years before?) He dropped out of the Senate race, citing his father's health.

5. How come if these emails were no big deal
where they copied to so many M$M outlets?

Seems someone was really trying to get their attention, even they changed their minds later.

7. FoxNews covered it up? Tiny, FEEBLE Right Wing Minds will explode.
Too much information for the Right Wing heads. They are used to a steady diet of Limbaugh, Coulter, Hannity lies and one sided, strawman debates.

Keep away from them. This will be messy.

27. I'd like to see it,
but I would really like to see and hear a statement from Walsh, about this.

This shit sickens me, I hated when the politicians remained silent about the secret vote counting machines, but this come on, we have a child predator, we have people that covered for that predator,

WHERE ARE THE MEN HERE??

I know politicians are speaking out about this, but,

WHERE ARE THE MEN??

This shit has to be taken down and taken down NOW.

WHERE ARE THE MEN??

32. Walsh's org had a blurb up and ended it with "He'll be missed"
Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 10:36 AM by arnheim
They later took it down but a DUer captured the screen. Let me look for the link again, lol.

On edit: Here is the link to one thread that has the original statement. Look at post # 3
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=2294836

Walsh is a big repub and got a lot of $$ and fame by working with Foley. There's a better thread about it (more in-depth) but I can't find it.

that his hitting on young pages would be relevant, even if the emails were more suggestive than explicit.

26. "...lacking any corroborating information, we chose not to do a story."
Corroborating information, like, If He were a Democrat, that would be corroborating information?

But seriously, "lacking any corroborating information" and knowing he's a Republican, they decided not only NOT to do a story, which might be responsible, but chose NOT to investigate further so they could FIND corroborating evidence so they could break the story? Hmmm..."Fair and Balanced", Huh? Bullshit. If they could have found any evidence on a Democrat, you'd BET they'd have dug a little deeper to get the story out. They'd have put a TEAM on it.
