Bill W must be spinning in his grave
This is not what he envisioned for recovery. What a bunch of bullshit. How many alcoholics do we know who went through years of agonizing recovery before finally facing the fact that it was they who are responsible, not the abuser, not the alcohol, not the drug, not the parents. This is an insult to all those who faced those they harmed and took their responsibily. I'm sick of AA being used like this.

1. where did it say foley had anything to do with AA? did I miss something?
supposedly he is in a high-priced, cozy little rehab in clearwater, with internet access.

2. The whole program is about personal responsibility -
Not blaming your parents, the church, your teachers,
your race, etc.

AA was not meant to be a place for the politically and morally irresponsible to hide.

3. EXACTLY!
Even tho they don't mention AA, it is a major part of rehab recovery and using it politically is just wrong. They don't have to say AA ro imply its meaning.

7. sorry, I just assumed he was parking his rear in some cozy little
place where he wouldn't actually be doing anything except continuing to play on the net. I have friends in AA--would not dream of associating them with anything he is supposed to be doing.

4. yes,,,, I just posted something similiar on another thread,,,,,
I choked when the atty said that divulging this was 'part of his recovery',,,, that is such BS.

It takes months/years to complete the Steps.

5. They're whoring the program.
It messes with my recovery. Doesn't make me want to drink, but it cheapens the process of the 12 steps.

6. I say we take them on.
Send emails to the networks reminding them of the traditions of recovery in addition to the steps.
Namely the tradition of anonymity with regard the press and radio. Anonymity is a cornerstone of
sobriety.

By outing himself as an addict and using the recovery process as a place to hide and save his ass,
he starts out trashing the principle of honesty most necessary for recovery. Claiming that a
priest from the past is responsible for his present is not a good beginning. He attempts to absolve
himself for not having any control over himself and responsibility for his actions.

8. Well hopefully it will come to that....
by "that" I mean taking responsibility for his actions. Unfortunately, he's got a lot of work to do before understanding this point. How many "desire chippers" do you know that come to recovery understanding that the "unfortunate events" in their lives that brought them to the last house on the block are of their own making ?

*peace.

10. Seems like lots of people use this to protect themselves

Every goddamn person I've seen on tv over the past few years who has been accused of molestation has "confessed" that they were an alcoholic. It makes me want to scream every time.
