|
Edited on Tue Oct-03-06 06:20 PM by Adenoid_Hynkel
the revalation was in 1983
not excusing anything (I honestly know little on that case, as a was 6 years old in '83), but since hannity acts like this happened yesterday, we might want to realize that his only defense of hastert is to dig up a 33-year old news story. the man's been retired for almost a decade. But why stop with 30 years-why not come with some flawed logic to blame it all on Adlai Stevenson? That will really resonate with the voters of today.

5. I was the first female with a daily talk show in Boston in 1973 -- |
|
believe me, this was a BIG story. Of course, there was no Internet twist on it. Studds was censured, I believe, but went on to be re-elected and served his term.
It's been a long time ago, and I hope I have my facts straight.
Mike Barnicle brought it up on the MSNBC show tonight.
You could probably get the details from the archives at the Boston Globe, but you'd have to pay for them.
In peace,

2. 30 yrs ago, Bush was drunk, AWOL, and getting DUIs |
|
Do they really want to bring up the past because we can go there if they want to... STill, this whole "Dems did it too" defense is beyond ridiculous.

3. here's how I handle the Gerry Studds' comparison |
|
"Gerry Studds,a Democrat, and Dan Crane, a Republican, were both found in 1983 to previously have had sexual relationships with seventeen year old pages (in Studds case, the page was male, in Crane's case it was a female). They were both censured. I believe that they got off too lightly and that both of them should have been forced to resign."
That's it. Issue nullified.

Along with the original poster, I thought this all happened in 1973 -- not 1983. At least, that's what I remember, but I could be off by a decade.
See my former post #5 upthread.

14. Studds' transgression actually happened in 1973... |
|
...he was not censured until 1983, along with Dan Crane, whose transgression was more recent.

16. Ahah1 Thanks for the clarification. I was on air from 1972 to about |
|
1979 in Boston, then did movie reviews and night fill-ins for other Boston hosts in the very early 1980s. After that, I went into a sales career in the first few years of the 1980s (still a political animal, however!)
I really appreciate your post.

probably played by (with?) himself a lot.

11. Pathetic Whig propaganda! William King was an adult -- NOT an intern. |
|
Don't try and blame this on King and Buchanan when you and your ilk are constantly letting Zachary Taylor off the hook!

8. Republicans are deliberately "stupid", to wit: they are arguing either |
|
that what both men did is A-OK, thereby excusing Studds; OR they are arguing that what both men did is WRONG, thereby inculpating Foley.

12. Also not excusing anything, but the laws against this type of thing |
|
are miles different today than they were 30 years ago. They better work harder to find a defense.

17. I really think its a mistake to argue that the studds case was "long ago" |
|
I wasn't prepared to give Hyde a free pass for what he did 40 years ago, or to Gingrich for what he did 20 years ago, so I'm not about to suggest that Studds (or Crane) get a free pass because of what they did 20-30 years ago. I'd rather be consistent and make the point that both Crane and Studds were treated too leniently.
