RADCLIFF, Kentucky (AP) -- An Army soldier who fled to Canada rather than redeploy to Iraq surrendered Tuesday to military officials after asking for leniency.

Spc. Darrell Anderson, 24, said he deserted the Army last year because he could no longer fight in what he believes is an illegal war.

"I feel that by resisting I made up for the things I did in Iraq," Anderson said during a press briefing shortly before he turned himself in at nearby Fort Knox. "I feel I made up for the sins I committed in this war."

Anderson, of Lexington, returned to the United States from Canada on Saturday. He could face a charge of desertion.

1. Oh, my, what a heartbreaker. It's not just the Congressional pages that
this government has abused with their evil "might makes right" attitude. It's all the young people they have dragged into an unjust war. Some dead. Some with ghastly injuries. Some now with crimes on their consciences, and filling their sleep with nightmares. Some gone crazy. And some, like this one, appalled--and who had the courage to take action.

And now he must PAY for NOT fighting this unjust war? For being appalled at the crimes committed there? HE has to pay--as the real perps build up their multi-million dollar retirement funds at our expense?

HE goes to prison? And THEY go to luxury retirement? (--if we're lucky.)

What's wrong with this picture?

What say we all get together and create a Medal of Courage for those who resisted? They deserve our thanks. They deserve to be honored. And, when we get our country back, let us vow to free them from prison, and help them with their recovery from this outrageous injustice.
