First lady due here to aid Reynolds

Laura Bush, the one Republican everyone seems to like, is on her way to help bail out Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds.

She has been called the Republican Party's secret weapon - the woman to whom embattled Republicans turn when in trouble.

And if anyone has ever needed first lady Laura Bush to come to the rescue, it's Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds.

On one level, she will arrive Wednesday for a long scheduled fundraiser in the Buffalo Niagara Marriott in Amherst for the Clarence Republican, who faces a stiff local challenge. But on a higher level, she also brings first aid to a top party figure wounded by the controversy surrounding former Rep. Mark A. Foley of Florida.

Even before Foley's resignation Friday over improper communications with House pages, Reynolds had sought White House help for his tough re-election campaign against Akron industrialist Jack Davis.

He didn't seek President Bush, whose popularity ratings are near all-time lows, or Vice President Cheney, whose numbers also are cellar dwellers.

I guess Hillary was, too, but they didn't show her. They showed Bill several times, and it was in the paper, as well, saying what a great time he had, and how he was calling plays before they played them - Bill is LOVED (and the Bills owner and coaches said he knows his football.). THAT'S how you get to the people in Buffalo! They live for football.

Somehow I can't see Pickles among the "common people". She'll probably be preaching to the constantly-growing-smaller choir.
