Mayor Daley defended U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert today amid mounting pressure for the Illinois Republican powerhouse to resign as speaker for failing to investigate Mark Foley’s lurid e-mails to an underage page.

The Washington Times, a conservative newspaper, has demanded Hastert’s resignation. Daley considers the demand over the top.

“If you took the impropriety of every congressman and senator in Washington D.C. , I don’t think anybody would be left,” Daley said.

“I’ve known Denny Hastert personally and publicly for a long time. He’s been a great public servant, a great speaker of the House. He really has. He’s been very fair to the city of Chicago, which he didn’t have to. This idea of asking everyone to resign — there would be no one left in Congress. They’d better be careful,” Daley said.

Pressed on whether Hastert did enough to pursue allegations against Florida Republican Mark Foley, Daley said, “I don’t know all the particulars. But again, asking everyone to resign — there’d be no one left.”
