36. One way to do that
is to boycott GE products. I don't buy GE products. I don't buy GE light bulbs. Perhaps letting GE also know how we feel about their subsidiary would be useful.

44. Ah, good
I can participate in boycotting GE. I'm never able to participate in the boycott TV stations ones because I don't have cable or even a set of rabbit ears. I have a screen upon which to play DVDs and I've been told that such a thing can be connected to cable but I don't care to test the theory.

....Keep Playing 'Hardball' with Chris Matthews and MSNBC
by Rep Louise Slaughter
Tue Jan 24, 2006 at 05:07:16 PM PDT

Please only recommend this diary if you think others should see the information I'm posting.

Over the last few days, I have watched with concern as prominent media personalities and political pundits like Chris Matthews have engaged in reckless rhetoric comparing critics of the Bush Administration to the world's most wanted terrorist, Osama Bin Laden. This isn't just offensive, it's absurd-- and harmful to our nation.

I share your outrage about the insulting comparison between Democrats and the man who is actively pursuing America's annihilation. I urge you to keep up your public pressure on MSNBC so that it gets the message that these reckless comparisons to Bin Laden made by its commentators don't have any place in our political discourse.

Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 07:30 PM by MessiahRp
"On November 1, 2005, Chris Matthews accused Democrats of "perhaps exploiting" the tragic deaths of our brave men and women serving in Iraq (Hardball, 11/1/05). To suggest that the deaths of our service men and women could be used for political gain cheapens their sacrifice and trivializes the debate on one of the most important policy issues facing our nation. I might be able to chock this up to a callus slip of the tongue if it weren't for the fact that these irresponsible comments are becoming a pattern for Mr. Matthews and other hosts on his network."

Thinking about it... what's worse? Democrats using 2,200 dead soldiers to prove that a war is unjustified and ask for a pullout THUS KEEPING OTHER SOLDIERS ALIVE or Republicans using 3,000+ dead civilians as an excuse to hijack the constitution and send even more Americans to die for a purposely mismanaged war without end?

Seems like a "slam dunk" argument to me.

20. REP. LOUISE SLAUGHER IS GREAT!
She also mentioned Tucker Carlson & Joe Scarborough. I would like to add Rita Cosby's name. Matthews, Carlson, Scarborough and Cosby had a cozy gang bang. I think the other three were guests on Matthews show where they proceeded to act in concert degrading Dems. Cosby mostly shook her bobble head in firm agreement with the other three propagandists. All four were sickening. Notably absent was Keith Olbermann.

27. I sent an e-mail ...
About three weeks ago ... Very complimentary of the shows format, and very well toned ... However, I pointed out how Mathews had a clear slant toward the right, while constantly unfairly characterizing democrats, and I proved some examples from shows ... My bottom line, I just wanted a fair fight called ...

I was on the edge last week with him spending three nights on a fishing expedition to find a way to get momentum on Hillary's plantation remarks, and then the michael moore/UBL thing ... I KNEW the hotshots segment was going to be bad, but it was worse than I imagined ...

I e-mailed them that if I wanted to see a conservative clusterfuck like that, I would watch Fox News, in those exact words ... I also noted that I was done with Mathews, and they were cancelling Olbermann away from me putting their network on our cable block list ...

I WANT to like Hardball, cause it is meat and bones political stuff, which is what I want, and he does get into a groove on taking to task some of the things going on ... But, I am done with his CONSTANT snarky attitude toward Ds ... DONE ...

It is all fine and well that he will expose some of the problems, but his neverending demeaning attitude toward the Ds, while holding the Rs in reverant status has worn out with me ...

35. I sent my letter
I am getting so SICK of all the snarky commentary.

Here's my letter:

"After the release of the most recent bin Laden tape, some of your commentators (Matthews, Scarborough, and Carlson) made some off-the-cuff, sneering remarks comparing those of us who are against the Bush Administration's foreign policy to bin Laden. I deeply, deeply resent this. I am a patriotic American who also happens to disagree with our position abroad, and I do not appreciate being slurred by such puerile insinuations comparing those like myself to killers. I believe an apology -- to at least half of America -- is in order."

38. I wish we could have understood the damage that Chris Matthews
was going to have on our nation back in 2000 and nipped him in the bud back then. The man put the "jerk" in knee-jerking journalism. His handlers should have realized what a fluff he was when he admitted he didn't have the talent to write articles for the San Francisco Chronicle. As far as I can tell, that's the only time Chris Matthews has made an honest statement.

56. I remember everything like it was yesterday.
He barred his teeth at Gore, he made flirty eyes at Bush. In the end he said that it was customary to be harder on the incumbent in a presidential debate than on the challenger. He said that to justify the way he was harder on Gore than on Bush. Then he got all weepy when Gore gave his concession speech; but later, Matthews admitted he had voted for Bush and also made the statement that the Democrats had been in power long enough.

The way we now see how he's protecting Bush and the present political environment, it's obvious that Matthews sold his soul to the devil. It's all about the money for him. There's money to be had in selling out your country.

58. In 2000, there was NO difference between Matthews and O'Reilly
Then again, nor is there one in 2006. BTW, I also remember Matthews having Republican pollster Frank Luntz on as a contributor (of course, MSNBC did this until 2004, and they even gave him his own show briefly in 2003.) I remember Luntz peddling the "Clinton fatigue" meme, and would use his personal bias as a representation of the electorate, and what was worse was that Lutz was not labeled a partisan pollster.

51. No is relevant because....
He is cartoon version of the "conventional wisdom" that drives plitics and values.

Sure he's ridulous, and his show does not have a big audience. But he does help to generate and reflect the larger zeitgeist that eminates from the Washington/Media Axis of Banality. Thus it dos influence what the largr majority perceive about issues and politics and values.

Remember how Howard dean -- basiclly a moderate -- was perceived as a wild-eyed ranting leftist because of media manipulation?

That's why it matters.

54. My Letter to Chris Matthews
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 01:05 PM by dogday
Dear Mr. Matthews:

First off let me say I am not a Democrat, but none the less, I was offended at your comment comparing Democrats to OBL. Had you of compared the Republicans to OBL, we would of never heard the end of their tears and moans.

I am a registered independent. I vote for the candidate I feel would do the best job, regardless of party affiliation. I cannot believe you would be so slimy as to make this comparison. I feel there is a war against Democrats and I don't like it and many other people in this country don't like it. America belongs to all the people not just those with money Chris, and certainly not republicans only.

Lastly. I am the Mother of my only Son who is a soldier in Iraq, in Tikrit, specifically. I would like to think my son is fighting for all of the Americans in the country, not some of them as you are trying to pull off. I will ask my Son what he thinks of your remarks and what it does to a soldier to see so called journalist taking sides instead of being neutral. I am sure he would say he is fighting for your life too Chris, yes he is, your life too. I bet those soldiers over there being shot at are not worrying about what party they are in, and you should really think about what you say before you say it...

Wonder what kind of response you will get. Send this to competing networks & newspapers- such as Lou Dobbs @ CNN - they may use this to attack Matthews with. Also, I'm sure he is a chicken hawk like most of the right wingers. The ones that scream the most about supporting the troops are still here in America & not in Iraq where they belong.

Every time someone does something stupid like this, I do wonder, what the hell is my Son fighting for? Well he is fighting for the rights of the Democratic Party, yes he is even fighting for the rights of the Republican party. But when the media starts smearing the Democratic party, they are in a sense nullifying his efforts...
