NewsHour covering WaPo & Howell and shutting down the blog
wow - panel discussion and everything

they mentioned "hate speech" and then they showed some actual of the actual hateful quotes, such as the paper needs an "enema"

4. actually the panelists are pretty good
It's a guy from WaPo and a woman from boingboing.net and both are just saying that their technology wasn't prepared to monitor the site - they had not registration so they couldn't ban posters, etc.

8. Jim Brady, Washington Post said they are committed to internet
however, he said that they took the site down as a response to "profanity" and read
the statement about the "enema" The majority of the comments on the Post site made were on her misleading statement not on blogger protocol. They are going to establish filters to block obscenity and are considering requiring e-mail registration to post on blog so that they can block abusers. The attitude by the commentator from the News Hour (Jeffrey????) was that was it worth it to bring in the bloggers (into a "pure" mainstream medium); esp. if
they couldn't behave. I am sorry I have a big problem with this, the MSM has been
complicit with much that has gone down the last 5 years and much of it has been not
very pretty, from locking up women and children at Abu Ghraib to torture at GITMO. Later,
like the NY Times, they can cry they did not do responsible journalism on the run to
war in Iraq. But like Bush, we are allowed to criticize them, only in a polite tone
and only when it is marginalized. You can criticize but you CAN'T CRITICIZE.

11. Maybe it is but the bloggers will stand up
we are not going to let them demonize us

2. I'll cry tomorrow
I am not going to sit idly by while Karl Rove smears legitimate criticism as treason, while
he trys to wiggle out of an investigation of the outing of a covert CIA agent. What is
unusual is this time they did not get a free pass to pull this crap.

6. it's pretty much not
they are just discussing the changing nature of the relationship between writers and readers - they are not getting into Ms. Howell and her aspersions against Democrats - just discussing that they didn't have a system in place to handle it - they will fix it and put it back up

9. Yes, read my post above
the old wheeze that bloggers are profane, anonymous posters who take advantage to their secret status to respond w/o facts based on whimsy, I have never been ashamed of what I have said here or on other blogs. I am willing to respect this site and other sites I post at. What I am not willing to respect is using the mainstream media to destroy our 2 party system and win support for illegal surveillance of our average citizens.
