U.S. to Stop Seizing Prescription Drugs Imported for Personal Use

The federal government is scaling back its efforts to intercept personal prescription orders mailed from Canada and other countries, a step that could make it easier for consumers to obtain cheaper drugs from abroad.

Beginning Monday, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency will end an 11-month-old policy under which agents seized about 40,000 prescription drug packages at international mail centers as of July, said Lynn Hollinger, a spokeswoman for the agency. Under that policy, the government notified intended recipients by mail that the purchases violated laws against importing drugs.
