Winning For All the Wrong Reasons….
Don't get me wrong. Given the choice of losing in November or winning, I'll take winning every day.

But something about this Foley thing just doesn't feel right, and I don't mean I'm squeamish about the Politics of Self-Destruction. It was a Republican who turned him in to ABC; the same network that gave us Path to 9/11 a few weeks back. And the usual media whores who have no problem spinning for Bush are all lining up to take their shot at Foley/Hastert. Something feels off about this.

OK follow me here:

First, this will be many, many folk's first election with HAVA's new electronic voting machines. A Republican win would turn the now growing Paper Ballot movement into an unstoppable beast. But if there's a big Democratic win, the Election Reform movement will fade and these machines will be cemented in place for a whole generation.

Next, we have Iran. The troops are stretched so thin that a move on Iran will require a draft. Even with a new terror attack I think Bush and an All-Republican congress will have a hard time getting the kind of support they will need. But if a new conscription law were passed by a Democratic congress in response to a terror attack....

So perhaps it's been decided that this is the year to give one to the suckers. But they didn't want it to be seen that Iraq was the reason for the win. So, how to give the Democrats the win and yet not give them a mandate. Hmmm...

Despicable.

You aren't taking advantage of anyone, by the way.

Those bloody machines will all be trashed by 2008, trust me.

2. I think some conservatives think it's time to sit out a quarter.
You are absolutely right. They think the Chimp and friends have fumbled the ball and it's time to change quarterbacks, even if it means giving up a few yards in the short run.

3. AND coinciding with a book tour where their LIES about 9-11 and Iraq are
being discussed.

The controlled burn is taking up all the oxygen (airtime) and preventing the wildfire that was heading their way.

22. 'Controlled Burn', Good Analogy. Thing Is, I Think They Have A Bandelier
'controlled burn' on their hands. It's jumped the line and is heading for town of Hastert.

I think Phase I of Operation Distraction (Foley) was to be followed by Phase II (Dem tie-in).

Problem is, Hastert has been pulled in, and they did not anticipate this. There is no way having the Speaker step down in scandal five weeks before a major election is a good thing (unless someone is trying to lose the House). Any positive effect anticipated by Operation Distraction has now been offset.

Rove plays dirty, but he is no 'genius', and his plans are not immune from chaos.

14. Probably true, but the fact is ...
Edited on Wed Oct-04-06 08:32 PM by BattyDem
none of those other HORRIBLE things were sticking! Most Americans didn't know about them, didn't fully understand them or simply didn't care. Like it or not, Americans GET this and they are outraged ... FINALLY! Death and deception didn't hold their attention - but this has them talking, thinking, asking questions and getting angry.

We weren't getting anywhere with the "important" stuff, so if this is what it takes ... so be it.

6. The paper ballot movement must NOT end with a Dem win
I hope that all of us in this fight realize that. We must ensure election integrity for the future, and we must stand against election fraud no matter who's winning. If we let it drop just because we win one election, we are not only naive, but hypocrites.

We need to get to the bottom of all the bullshit that's been flying for the past 6 years.

9. Do you honestly think the GOP will ever give us paper ballots?
We need to win by a LANDSLIDE, so (hopefully) they can't steal it without it being painfully obvious to even the biggest idiot. If the Democrats win, we stand a much better chance of getting those paper ballots in the future. If the GOP wins, it's more lies, war, torture and intimidation.

I don't care if this "feels right" - our democracy NEEDS this win!

We might have won anyway. I think you are giving the GOP waaay too much credit. They didn't expect this and this just is a pile on on top od everything else. JMHO.

23. I Have Heard Hartmann Mention That There Are Some Paleo-Con Types
who want the Dems to take the House in 06 to: 1) Help with holding the White House in 08 by providing a scapegoat for the shitstorm coming in the next few years; and 2) to provide some check to the Neo-cons.

I could definitely see this as a Paleo-Con action, some group outside the administration.

That said, it is still better to be in power than to be out of power, but I still have great concerns. What happens if Chimp slaps a Gulf of Tonkin on the Democratic Congress as you suggest. If they win, I hope to hell someone is thinking about the next move, as the battle has just been engaged.

that you can't just rig election after election and still maintain faith in the system.
