Is Hastert staying as Speaker better for Dems?
I've been thinking about this ever since the Foley trouble came to light. Wouldn't it be better to have Denny stayas Speaker because it keeps him and his ignoring of the Foley problem in the headlines? If he resigned, it could be pushed by the Pubs ashaving taken care of the problem.

5. Mathews on MSNBC is just now interviewing thejournalist from "The Hill"
and he said the same thing. If Hastert stays, it's BAD for the Pubs! If all they do is name an investigator, they'll suffer.

2. Whether he stays or goes it's good for the dems, IMO

If he resigned, it would be an acceptance of guilt. If he stayed, it keeps the story going. The story will still go with the Ethics committee and the criminal investigations by the Feds and in Florida.

Won't matter. It's good for the dems all the way around. :)

3. Exactree the way I see it. Even if he does leave, the story continues.
They fucking loose either way. Still the party of perverts whether he stays or whether he goes.

4. I think it is
I was just checking Kos. There I read this:

Fox reporting that polling has been shared with GOP leadership that shows that Hastert remaining speaker could be "catastrophic". Adding that its just a "data point" and doesn't mean that Hastert will actually step down.

So, yes, it is better for dems is Hastert stays as Speaker...

7. Absolutely - it's better if he stays.
Hastert's a great, giant blimp floating here and there reminding everyone how corrupt their leadership is. I doubt he's going to resign. This will probably be a "blame the Democrats" speech which is the most puzzling of all the excuses out there.

9. I don't know about the headlines being that important.
But it does mean that the Speaker will still have a big target painted on his back.

However, if Denny the Hut did resign, it would throw the House into disarray because all the rest of the House Repuke leaders are equally implicated in this crazy Foley business. Wouldn't Boehner and Reynolds also have to resign their leadership positions? The new leadership might have to be back-benchers before they found somebody who was untainted.

I think this is the only reason why Denny the Hut isn't resigning.

Those here saying that he shouldn't resign aren't thinking. We really want him to resign so that the spectacle of the House Repukes warring amongst themselves to replace him will be front and center. Plus, a disgraced Speaker is easier to defeat in his district than a repentent one.

12. Yes, I think it would be better...
According to Bernie Ward, they are just throwing Foley and Hastert under the bus, but if he stays around the stigma of "Brownie" will follow.

13. Hastert just canceled all his fund raisers
He is going to be unable to do his job, so might as well let him stay. He does a lot more harm then good this way.

14. But But.....
If he steps down, the story stays on the front page for at least another 2 weeks and it provides more ammunition to the dems that are running. So... no... His staying helps the pukes...his leaving helps us. IMHO.

15. Yes.
He does more harm than good. People will not forget this.

He will be stained for this. Keep him there.

The public is also outraged at his reasoning for staying. All about defying Dems' dirty tricks. NO mention about what is best for the children or what is best for the Congress as an institution.

It is clear he doesn't get it yet. He doesn't understand that Joe Moron on the street is disgusted by this and he is stained with it. He is finished. Dead man walking.

He will put out a phone number hoping someone reports a Democrat for something. I suppose the Republican leadership gave him a few days to put this out there and find someone on the other side of the aisle who did something as bad or worse. If he doesn't find something, I think he will have to go.

We should push for his resignation, and we should say it isn't always about politics, it is about the safety of our children. That will have appeal beyond this issue.

We should also ask about why he allowed Foley to pay Reynolds $100K bribe to stay quiet. Dig into the quid pro quo bribery in the Congress, and they will toss over anyone you ask for.

Lastly, we need someone who has had contact with Foley to come forward. Someone who actually met with him and suffered an unwelcome advance.

16. Local news stations are getting local reaction in Batavia
where his office is located.

The locals just think good ole boy Denny is being made into a scapegoat by the bad Dems. All of them, ALL of them said that he would never have sat on the scandal, that he would have been all over this if he knew the truth, and that his aides are the bad boys in this - their screening of the info about Foley is the problem.

This is a very RED district. And Denny has played his persona, local high school wrestling coach goes to Washington, to the hilt. People buy his shit out here and look the other way when it comes to his blatant criminal actions.

His LOWEST election year win was 64% guys. They love him here and unless he himself is found in bed with those teens, he'll win here.

John Laesch however will make a dent. He's a good candidate that's finally getting some air time. In this district, it will be a good thing that a Dem voice is even getting heard, even if they won't vote for him. That's at least one step in the right direction.....
