What kind of crazy legislation would you like to pass?
After we take over the House and Senate, that is.

How about a balanced budget, control over government spending! :silly: I know, I'm a wild and crazy gal. :woohoo:

1. National Health, goddammit!!
Oh, yeah, and a re-affirmation of the Geneva Conventions, a total outlawing of the use of torture by any branch of American military, intelligence, or law enforcement services, and a Constitutional Amendment mandating a single 20-year term for Supreme Court judges.

I've got a list, but those will do to start.

eagerly,
Bright

11. I'll take it, but frankly
I don't have any idea what would help or if anything will help at this point. If I were a public official in charge of it, I'd ask, yanno, SCIENTISTS, and start working on my crazy legislation from there. : )

17. I think we already have a pretty good idea of what will help ...

I remember that back in the 1980s, my mom remarked that tighter emission standards, plus making it easy for people to get along without having to drive around much (better urban design, more public transit, etc.), would be a big help for dealing with not just climate change, but a bunch of other problems too. And she was right! I've been training to be a scientist, and all my profs agree with my mom.

To address global warming and also the air quality problems caused by SO2 and NOx/VOCs/PM10, and mercury.

And a crazy wide-ranging visionary tax-shifting package like this gentleman proposes!

Complete with "Connie Mae" -- and also a crazy nationwide retrofitting plan, aimed at not just energy efficiency but putting Americans back to work, and encouraging more liveable communities!

9. Well, you DID say crazy.......
Legalize marijuana completely for anyone over 18. Tax the fk out of it (it will still be well below black-market price, I bet) and EVERY BIT OF THE PROCEEDS GOES TO SCHOOLS.

Seize assets of ANY church involved in politics. THAT GOES TO PUBLIC LIBRARIES.

Two year terms for public office, period. Period.

All public officials make the average wage for a public schoolteacher and not a penny more, and if a penny more is found in their COMPLETELY PUBLICALLY RECORDED financial business, life in prison.

This is me REINING IN the evil in my head.

10. Prohibit corporations from owning corporations.
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 04:56 PM by TahitiNut
Property can't own property ... just like my dog can't own my house.

Further, I'd impose a 1% 'national sales tax' on all trades or exchanges of stock (equities). Not bonds.

Even further, I'd impose a 2% 'export tax' on all transfers of capital outside the sovereign territory of the U.S. in excess of $10,000, offset by a credit for capital 'imported' in the prior 12 months.

And even further, I'd impose a sliding percentage, based on the unemployment rate, limit on the number of non-citizens (from green cards to work visas) permitted to be employed within the U.S. (I believe a 'working class' without voting rights is an abomination.)

29. It's a legal Frankenstein's Monster ... a 'person' made of 'property.'
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 05:31 PM by TahitiNut
It is, imho, at the very core of the corruption in our society.

It's a Monster which, by definition, exists solely for "the love of money" which is, we're told, the "root of all Evil."

While I wouldn't abolish the legal entity of a corporation, I'd impose very serious limits on its activities, the scope of those activities, and the manner in which it was both owned and operated. Very loosely-speaking, I'd limit them to something akin to a "Subchapter S" corporation.

31. I'd be happy if corporations could be treated LIKE people
You could sue them for damage, execute them for serious crimes causing deaths and force them to respect human rights in international courts.

Oh and tax them unconditionally at fixed rates when they make BILLIONS in profits.

22. The Global Warming initiative
The homeless initiative (Cities recieving penalties for homeless -- that would coz some out of the box thinking)

Something that rewards "pay it forward" type communities.

A teachers consotium for the educational problem.

Umm... oh TAXING CORPORATIONS again -- They take up the most resources and pay the least.

Tax incentives for the Rich ... hiring the poor. In country citizens. Taxing the outsourcing.

The penalties should fill the coffers for a bit, and an in country workforce will stabalize the economy.

Bringing back manufacturing, which really should be a security issue.

23. oh, and up in Canada -- official refugee status ....
... for people who may already be in some other country's army, but don't want to invade, torture, or kill other people! (I'm not American so I want to do my part to promote crazy legislation too.)

I mean, we have a national political party up here which comes up with crazy ideas, and the other parties steal stuff from them regularly. So if the crazy Medicare and crazy Charter of Rights and Freedoms thingies worked, it could happen with the other crazy plans too (national daycare, etc.)

Restoration of the fairness doctrine
Voting rights legislation aimed at the abuses of the Bush years
Serious aid to education (leaving schools under local control)
Ratification of the Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court
Legislation mandating stiffer penalties for environmental pollution
Legislation mandating stiffer penalties for unfair labor practices

Legislation to repeal:

USA PATRIOT Act (leave only that part that allows data sharing by intelligence and law enforcement agencies)
The Military Commissions Act (all of it -- there is nothing redeeming in this piece of crap)
The 2005 Bankruptcy Act

Other business:

Impeachment of Bush and Cheney
