House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) made no mention of tapping former FBI director Louis Freeh to lead an investigation into misconduct with House pages in a press conference moments ago, saying instead that he'd reached out to Pelosi to "share some ideas."

The move had been reported earlier by Roll Call. Shortly before Hastert's press conference, MSNBC reported that when the Speaker told the idea to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), "Pelosi said that's not good enough. We don't want an overhaul of the page program; we need a more thorough investigation."

In his statement, Hastert said he was "looking for a person of high caliber" to lead a probe into the matter. "I have reached out to the Democratic Leader," Hastert said, "and we hope to resolve this soon."

"I'm deeply sorry this has happened," Hastert told reporters assembled outside his Illinois district office, apparently referring to the Foley scandal. "Our system obviously isn't designed for this electronic age of instant messages."

It sure looks like the repukes are scared with their attempts to minimize the effects of Foleygate. I think that people, not freepers, but real Americans are coming around to the idea that they've been had by the right. That they have been played like a fidel. For a while I doubted that we could win back the House but now I think we will have both Houses next year. People want a clean sweep of that place and here hopes we don't let them down. I hope that we have investigations but not only that. We also need to put forth an new direction for this country so that voters will vote Dem in 2008 too.

This gives Hastert and the corporate spinners the meme that it was the Demorats that blocked Freeh. Personally, I'm glad cause this weasel is a political opportunist who will job the results of this investigation just like he did about investigating Clinton or Al Queda for a nice pay-off on the other end.

The clock's still running on getting a serious investigation going and Hastert did little to slow this runaway train down today.
