--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Politics of Disaster: Katrina, Big Government, and a New Strategy for Future Crises
Marvin Olasky

In a talk about his book, "The Politics of Disaster," Marvin Olasky argues that politicians use natural disasters for political gain rather than as an opportunity to improve the lives of victims. The author examines the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, suggests how to reform the national disaster policy, and examines policies that place disaster relief burdens on businesses and faith-based organizations, who he thinks are better equipped than the federal government to respond to disasters. He blames the government's current system of filing reports and lengthy paperwork for causing failures to get relief supplies to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Commonwealth Club in San Francisco hosted the event.

Marvin Olasky is a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin and the editor-in-chief of World, a national weekly news magazine written from a biblical perspective. He has written twenty books on history and cultural analysis, including "Abortion Rites," "The American Leadership Tradition," and "The Religions Next Door."

50. Kiesling is a breath of fresh air
I saw him speak on BookTV. It's rare that I hear someone speak about diplomacy and world politics and think, "Wow. That makes perfect sense." I felt that way hearing Kiesling. I didn't even realize he was the guy who resigned his post in protest over the impending Iraq invasion (I tuned in to the talk in progress). I will definitely be getting a copy of this book, and I look forward to reading it.

47. You mean me right?
What's happening to me? I just got back from a quilt show, stopped in at the local evangelical Lutheran church to see when services are (10:00 AM Sun.), and in an hour I'll be turning a food mill to make some applesauce.

My neighbor ladies are corrupting me! I need an afternoon with drunken, stumbling, foul-mouthed DUers! Help!
