Guy Fawkes, can he rescue us? |
|
I know I am late to see the movie...but "V for Vendetta" has given me a boost...right when I needed it.
Has anyone seen this futuristic/terrorism plot thriller based on a comic book about the historical Guy Fawkes character from English history? Hit the spot in my book...right on with the neo-Fascist, right wing oppressive government pitch and the fight to reclaim personal dignity, rights and freedom.
Is there a Guy Fawkes out there who can save us?

but, IMO, let's don't be talking capitol crimes here.
Does no good.
And besides. What would become of our country if some moron killed all the people in government? Granted, I have no love for them, but, Jesus Christ!

7. I guess you see what you see.... |

I did not see murder nor do I condone the taking of lives as the means to a just end.
What I saw in the movie was a leader who mobilized the masses to take on tyranny. Then that leader gave his life for the good of all....certainly some self motivation, but in the end it was the masses who made the change.
Yes it is up to the voters..but where do we find a leader who can mobilize the voters on an issue or issues that will make it so? This is not about the dreams of a child...but the reality I want for my grandkids.

3. No...there is no hero...there is no definitive event |
|
We rescue ourselves, perpetually.
That is how politics works. Only children dream of Guy Fawkes characters who turn the world behind one event. It is the stuff of bad narrative, but it is childish in the extreme when it comes to political practice.

There is no one man who could do as Guy Fawkes did; but that isn't the lesson of the film. There IS someone out there who can motivate, enlighten, and guide. There is someone who can cause an effect similar to the end of the film.
To accomplish this, we need more than a mere politician - we need a leader in the best and truest sense. The U.S. has had some good ones - FDR is one of my favorites.
So when you vote, or decide on doing some work for your favorite candidate, you might ask yourself - is this someone who can speak to the people and get them to join in doing what needs to be done.
V may not exist; but the spirit, the idea if you will - that lives. And that's something we can work to bring forth.

More for the illustrative example of an oppressive government than for V's crimes. I enjoyed the flow of the story. It's a fantasy but then, most art usually is.

From the rules:
Do not post messages that could be construed as advocating harm or death to the president or other high-ranking official in the United States government. In the case of the president, do not even post jokes, as the Secret Service is not known for its sense of humor.
Do not post messages that could be construed as advocating armed revolution or violent overthrow of the government of the United States.
By the way, the most important thing one ought to take from Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot: the plot was discovered, Fawkes was tortured and then executed for treason, and James I (VI) reigned for 16 more years. It's not as romantic as some might like to imagine.
