Hastert lives with his Chief of Staff Scott Palmer? Odd, but, oh well.
According to Lawrence O'donnell...

~snip~ There are plenty of odd couple Congressmen who have roomed together on Capitol Hill, but I have never heard of a chief of staff who rooms with his boss. It is beyond unusual. But it must have its advantages. Anything they forget to tell each other at the office, they have until bedtime to catch up on. And then there's breakfast for anything they forgot to tell each other before falling asleep. And then there's all day at the office. Hastert and Palmer are together more than any other co-workers in the Congress.

10. There are two possibilities with Hastert:
1. He is super straight and only thinks of it as bunking, like bunking in the military.

2. He is gay and that is why he lives with his male chief of staff.

It should be noted that Tom DeLay, another member of the House leadership, lived in a small apartment...alone.

It is kind of weird for the most important person in the House to live with other people, especially when Hastert has a net worth of $6 million dollars.

My GOD! With this in the hopper why didn't he resign????

The only thing I can think of is that he is not committing a crime, except maybe adultery (like Clinton), and he's always been protected so far.

But, between Americablog and O'Donnell, I don't think this secret will last the week. If you put the articles together, Hastert is outed.

98. HI Binka!
We don't want Hastert to IMPLODE, for christ's sakes he could cause a BLACK HOLE with that bulk and the result would suck all of the known universe into his force field, probably his navel :)

Tho if he Exploded it would be like Krakatoa, shock waves felt all the way to Britain no doubt.

I like what Hunter Thompson once said about Nixon. He'd said that he wanted to see Nixon dead, when his editor told him, "You can't say that, you can be arrested for statements like that, you can use metaphors but not direct statements.."

So Hunter replied, "How about 'I'd like to see Nixon with his intestines wrapped around a phone booth'?"

The editor said that would be fine :)

I'm pretty sure that Hastert has enough intestines to wrapped around Congress, gaily festooned just in time for Christmas :)

I love the pic they supplied with the "Soros and the Aliens are after us" schtick that Hastert started with the other day, before his saner pals told him to knock it off.. the picture showed Foley, looking creepy as usual, and then Hastert with his night crawler LIPS making a perfect circle - he looked just like a giant inflatable sex toy :)

106. As I recall it....
In a lot of ways, Congress resembles a university, or more often a fraternity at a university. As such, Congress has a large dorm system. It used to be official, but I don't know if it still is. Other Members shack up with one another because they at least are bound by the same rules of confidentiality, and lack thereof. There have been all sorts of unusual pairings in DC, not a single one of which I can recall beyond James Buchanan and Rufus King, who lived together for sixteen years before going on to be President and Vice President in later times.

Years ago I knew a lobbyist with an inside track on a particular Republican Member of Congress because that guy lived with the lobbyist's good friend, a Democratic Member of Congress--an odd-couple living arrangement which was noted for its humorous potential, but which was hardly unique. Now I really do wish I could remember who they were.

Most of those relationships are not even remotely suspected of being sexual. Rather, many Members of Congress make something of a show of "just visiting," either because they're one-or-two termers or because they want to let their consituents know that they still "live" at home, or because the rest of the family does not wish to relocate, or because they're such sluts that they don't need a bed of their own.

68. No it's not that weird for important people to live with others
politics is a 24hr a day profession, like being in the military on permanent campaign.
If I were an important legislator I would definitely want some of my staff to live with me, and not for midnight tickle fights. Conspiracies really require face to face presence.

Tom Delay lived alone in a small apartment because his downtime requirements were fulfilled by a coffin full of dirt.

Here's the thing though: if you were a straight legislator (or a gay one) who needed live-in help--counselors and advisors and research assistants--you'd want not just minions and underlings who can do research but above all one trusted person who was your equal mentally and in tune with you ideologically. Where will you find such a person who will not have their own family life to interfere with serving your cause on a 24hr basis? Where will you find someone who's your equal on the one hand, but on the other hand who represents no threat to "go off on his own" as an elected politician?
That's right: you need yourself a GAY.

Edited on Sat Oct-07-06 12:53 PM by Pirate Smile
OK, I found this:

"Just ran into: Jean Hastert, wife of House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert

Valentine's Day special....
Just ran into Jean Hastert, the wife of House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) in the hallway outside the speakers' Capitol office suite. She just dropped in on her husband.

It's a rare D.C. appearence for Mrs. Hastert. She was here a few weeks ago for President Bush's State of the Union address. She was off to an afternoon tea, at an ambassador's residence, sponsored by some international group.

When in Washington, the speaker lives in a group house with his chief of staff, Scott Palmer and top deputy, Mike Stokke.

I asked her if she is bunking with the guys.
She is not. She stays in a hotel.
As we parted from our brief encounter, Mrs. Hastert said to me, ``write good things.''

I said something like it's not always possible. I mumbled a bit about how her husband has gotten peeved with me.

In my business, I said, they ``shoot the messenger.''"

The Article: Fellowship finances townhouse where 6 congressmen live, By Lara Jakes Jordan, Associated Press, Sunday, 04/20/03

WASHINGTON — Six members of Congress live in a million-dollar Capitol Hill townhouse that is subsidized by a secretive religious organization, tax records show.

The lawmakers, all of whom are Christian ("believer"), pay low rent to live in the stately red brick, three-story house on C Street, two blocks from the Capitol. A group, alternately known as the Fellowship and the Foundation, that brings together world leaders and elected officials through religion, maintains it.

The Fellowship is host of receptions, luncheons and prayer meetings on the first two floors of the house, which is registered with the IRS as a church. The six lawmakers — U.S. Reps. Zach Wamp, R-Chattanooga; Bart Stupak, D-Mich.; Jim DeMint, R-S.C.; and Mike Doyle, D-Pa.; and U.S. Sens. John Ensign, R-Nev.; and Sam Brownback, R-Kan. — live in private rooms upstairs.

29. The Other Houseboy -- "Hastert's Intern"
Interesting article titled Inside Hastert Inc.:

Second to Palmer is the deputy chief of staff, Mike Stokke, 43. In addition to the men's government salaries, Hastert's political action committee pays them for outside political work, records show.

...Stokke, Hastert's deputy chief of staff and chief political operative, has a history with the speaker that dates to 1981, when Hastert was a freshman state legislator and Stokke was a college intern in the legislative liaison office for the Illinois Department of Conservation.

... When in Washington, Palmer, Stokke and Hastert share a townhouse near the Capitol. And, like Hastert, his top aides maintain residences in Illinois--Palmer in Aurora and Stokke in Bloomington. A typical night in Washington for Hastert is likely to end with a dinner with Palmer and Stokke at AV Ristorante Italiano, a red sauce Italian restaurant in a transitional neighborhood of Washington.

Sounds cozy enough.

If person in subordinate employment position wants out of any relationship, they may have problems with job & housing. Hmmm, there's an issue/

Haven't there been problems in the past with polls who have relationships with subordinates? Accusations of abuse? Blackmail? Oh yeah.

This could open up THAT can of worms ;) Oh, just musing & fishing

Tidbits

http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2006/02/just_ran_into_jean_hastert_wif.html">Just ran into Jean Hastert, the wife of House Speaker J.

Hastert said to me, "write good things."
I said something like it's not always possible. I mumbled a bit about how her husband has gotten peeved with me.

In my business, I said, they "shoot the messenger."

Not a smoking gun. Don't even know if it is the same guy, but came across this from http://www.dcfrontrunners.org/news2003.html">DCFR News in 2003:

. . Highlights of the race included Scott Walsberger finishing 17th overall, Blake Rushin finishing 2nd in her division, Scott Palmer injuring his leg at mile 1 but still finishing. . ."

From DCFR Welcome page:

DC Front Runners is a road-running and walking club for gay men, lesbians, and friends in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Membership is open to all people regardless of race, age, gender, sexual orientation, or athletic ability.

Haven't come across any more Stokke tidbits. . . Until he fell on his sword yesterday, looks like he kept a much lower profile than Palmer.

WRT other player, Fordam -- as back as 2004 reports identified Kirk Fordam as gay (e.g., http://www.washblade.com/2004/7-23/news/national/antigaysen.cfm">Washington Blade article).

This Kos diary covers the Gannon connections, but provides insights for those who are unfamiliar with the network of Cohnist types.

Which impeaches Palmer.

That IS relevant.

Would you take a fiancee's testimony that her man was innocent? Would you take a wife's? Hastert is vindicated ONLY by Palmer.

If they lie, and cheat, and then cover themselves in the protection OUR honor gives them? To hell with them. They have earned NO protection.

I figure they rented in the same place to save money as many legislators do. And I couldn't care less who sleeps where. The important thing to note is that they had more than enough opportunity to apprise each other of what goes on in the House of Rep. Bottom line - Hastert knew and put the Party above the youngsters.

86. Proof of his failure is that he wasn't told - if that's what happened
IMO, undeniable proof isn't the key. It's how Hastert managed the House. A Page predator in Congress is something he should have been aware of.

If his management style was to put the word out that he didn't want to deal with such important matters as the safety of youngsters - then that's a black eye to his leadership style. His staff, and others in the House, should know by his orders that he wants to know about such things immediately.

Even if he surrounds himself with staff who are negligent - that's his poor judgment again because he hired them.

Hastert is in a box and has nowhere to turn.

99. says Assturd did not jump to his defense during the press conf.

.....In Hastert's brief, evasive press conference on Thursday, sharp reporters immediately zeroed in on Palmer's role in the Foley information flow. Did Hastert leap to the defense of his chief of staff's honor in the crucial credibility contest with Kirk Fordham? Did he say I know Scott Palmer and I know he's telling the truth? No. He avoided every question with Palmer's name in it. Hastert obviously does not want to talk about Scott Palmer.

If Fordham did warn Palmer about Foley a long time ago, what are the odds that Palmer did not tell Hastert? As close to zero as you can get. Many chiefs of staff are close, very close, to their bosses on Capitol Hill. But none are closer than Scott Palmer is to Denny Hastert. They don't just work together all day, they live together.

They also had a need for 24/7/365 togetherness. In their case, Washington press corps kept a respectful silence -- nobody wanted to piss off the head of the FBI.

But, why has the Speaker's living arrangements been kept under cover for so long that we haven't heard about this until now?

Odd, in more ways than one.
