You've got JAIL!!!

IN CASE someone in the Justice Department is reading this, let me hasten to explain why I just clicked on the Victoria's Secret online catalog photo featuring a certain "Very Sexy Lace & Mesh Garter Belt." AOL made me do it.

Yes, the very same AOL which, like Yahoo and MSN, but not Google, has readily agreed to let you government snoops scrutinize the search words and results from their online search-engine data archives. If AOL is going to let the federal government know where I've been, they should admit they entrapped me!

(Honestly, officer, I heard that perky voice say "you've got mail," and then this ad popped up, and there was this lady in her undergarments, and anyway, it was just research.)

OK, for the time being, the Bush administration claims that it won't try to connect my name, or yours, with the massive bits of raw data it is demanding from the companies with the most popular search engines. Apparently, it is seeking evidence to prove that online porn is very popular and easily accessible as part of a last-ditch lawsuit to implement the 1998 Child Online Protection Act blocked by the courts.

1. What if...
They redirect you to some site that could be considered a terr'ist site? Then bust you for it.

What if they call you from Iraq or Pakistan and then snoop on your calls because you received a call from a terr'ist organization?

Can you tell they are making me paranoid?

2. Just because you're paranoid,
doesn't mean they're not out to get you!

This is beyond chilling and frightening and I never thought I'd see the day when something like this would happen in my own country.

3. I feel the same way.
There isn't a day that goes by anymore where I don't think :wtf:!

We are living in some very strange times. Now the question for me is, do I cancel my AOL because they are tools of the government?

10. Cancel AOHell, period, and
not just because of this bullshit, although that should be a large part of it. You pay twice as much for half the service that you get from much better, cheaper ISP's, their customer service sucks, their software sucks, even their chat boards suck. Just be persistent when you cancel, because they will do everything possible to keep you when you call to cancel, and I mean EVERYTHING. Be firm and PERSISTENT, even if they offer you a free vacation to Hawai or something.

And make sure they've actually stopped billing you, they've had to settle some class-action suits initiated by some states for continuing to bill after you've cancelled and for not actually cancelling the account.

Massive cancelations...a destroyed business ought to bring about a change in their policies.

7. I know I am going to jail.
One time I got a bug in my computer that would randomly throw up huge amounts of porn pages on my computer. I had a helluva time getting rid of it. It was not picked up at a porn site either as I am the only one who uses my computer.

9. I don't think Google is as clean as we think they are.
I posted on another thread that, when opening a gmail account, I was given a choice between using my SS#, my driver's license number, my library card number or writing a question for a pasword prompt.

That's a little invasive! I hope in my next life I come back on another planet. This one is getting too strange.

26. I have a couple of Gmail accounts... it's a choice so give them a question
It doesn't have to be a true or correct anwer. ;) As long as it's something you'll remember the answer to it will work just in case you forget. That's what I do for Gmail and all the other places I've run across that ask for password prompts like this. It's annoying, unnerving and I'm not defending it but I'm sadly also seeing it with increasing frequency.

If you are truly worried about your email/IMs are being monitered I'd suggest getting a good encyption program, like PGP, Blowfish, etc and using it. :)

11. As far as online porn being "easily available", they may have a point...
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 09:57 AM by mark11727
...a couple of years ago, my wife and I were attending a parent/teacher conference, and the cell phone went off. It was our son, and he was very upset.

"There's naked people all over the screen! It wasn't my fault!"

Apparently he mistyped a video-gamer's website's address, and BINGO! Hey presto, let's party.

I told him to get into Zone-Alarm, shut down the internet connection, switch off the computer, and that I'd check it out later.

There were pop-ups all over the place, malware, spyware, and it took a few days of digging and scraping to clean it all out.

AT the risk of sounding cliched, I'm no prude... I figure if someone wants to view pornography (not kiddie-porn, which is and should be illegal everywhere), that's their own (and occasionally, my own) business.

But I have a problem when it just spews out, whether you want it our not.

And I have an even BIGGER problem with * or whomever, monitoring what me and my own are Googling, ogling, or even accidentally falling into.

Just sayin'.

16. Sorry to disagree but
the short answer is not spending thousands to switch to a different computer. The real short answer is to educate yourself on how to block all that garbage. You can do it with a few free programs and a free browser like Firefox or Opera.

22. Dont mean to rain down on your funny post, but....
... if a popup window links you directly to a site (any site), that request is not sent thru a search engine, and thus is not retrievable by the Govt if they only look at Search Engine database queries. They'd have to get all HTTP Requests to/from a certain location to find direct HTTP requests.

:D
