Kolbe confirms that the GOP knew about Foley since 2000
Kolbe Saw Foley's Messages In 2000

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, October 9, 2006; Page A01

Another Republican congressman knew of disgraced former representative Mark Foley's inappropriate Internet exchanges as far back as 2000 and personally confronted Foley about his communications.

A spokeswoman for Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) confirmed yesterday that a former page showed the congressman Internet messages that had made the youth feel uncomfortable with the direction Foley (R-Fla.) was taking their e-mail relationship. Last week, when the Foley matter erupted, a Kolbe staff member suggested to the former page that he take the matter to the clerk of the House, Karen Haas, said Kolbe's press secretary, Korenna Cline.

The revelation pushes back by at least five years the date when a member of Congress has acknowledged learning of Foley's questionable behavior. A timeline issued by House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) suggested that the first lawmakers to know, Rep. John M. Shimkus (R-Ill.), the chairman of the House Page Board, and Rep. Rodney Alexander (R-La.), became aware of "over-friendly" e-mails only last fall. It also expands the universe of players in the drama beyond members, either in leadership or on the page board,

A source with direct knowledge of Kolbe's involvement said the messages shared with Kolbe were sexually explicit, and he read the contents to The Washington Post under condition that they are not reprinted. But Cline denied the source's characterization, saying only that the messages had made the former page feel uncomfortable. Nevertheless, she said, "corrective action" was taken. Cline said she still has not yet determined whether that action went beyond Kolbe's confrontation with Foley.

About when they first heard about Foley. There's no evidence that they DIDN'T know, and A LOT of evidence that they did. We need them under oath.

Dayum! Page A1, Now going into it's third week! Woot!

for the GOP to be able to manage this story into some tidy package now.

20. Since it is now revealed that Foley's actions go back at least
10 years ago, the rethugs better rethink their argument.

No, it wasn't Clinton...too early for that.

No, it wasn't the Dems holding back. I mean why did the Dems hold back during 2000, 2002 and 2004 and waited until now to spring it? Hello? Take responsibility.

As an aside, all these IGNORANT people keep talking about gays....again...get educated...all your have to do is Google it. The vast majority of pediphiles are HETEROSEXUAL. Yeah, I know it hurts.

14. look at this
from the story:

Kolbe once invited four former pages to make use of his Washington home while he was out of town, according to an instant message between Foley and another former page, Jordan Edmund, in January 2002. The pages planned to attend a first-year reunion of their page class. But they never took Kolbe up on his offer because of a snow storm, according to one of the four pages.

24. Kolbe announced his retirement last year. Served 22 years in Congress.
So this article's info has "got" to be the reason he announced his retirement last year? A bit of a leap I'd say.

16. That doesn't even make sense at this point
Foley is one seat in the House...the GOP has a 15 seat lead over the Dems (for now)...Foley lives in a secure republican district. It certainly wasn't to maintain their power. They could have allowed him to retire and found someone new without the baggage.

I suspect the reason for the coverup is far more sinister.

I think the Velvet Mafia is closing ranks, and I don't blame them. I think we're gonna hear much more in the days & weeks ahead. Maybe gay repubs are finally fed up; maybe they don't want to be swiftboated by the leadership.

The only thing is, I hope they'll all get on the record soon with what they know, for their own safety.

26. Sinister? Nah - predictable in this era...
Foley was a prolific fund raiser - both for his own campaign, and for his PAC. It appears that through his PAC he gave at least 100 grand a year to the NRCC. Why kill (professionally) a big campaign money source if one thinks one can cover up the ugly behavior?

42. I totally agree with you...absoultely...
This is more about covering up to maintain political control.

The only people who would POSSIBLY cover up for a pedophile--is another pedophile himself.

Furthermore---Hastert and others allowed Foley to remain as Chairman of the House Committee to
the Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

I'm sorry---but that is sociopathic and nothing put pure evil. They allowed a known pedophile
to spearhead the House's effort to protect children.

I believe that most of them are sociopathic abusers--in one way or another. Some of them abuse power. Some of them abuse children.

I wouldn't be shocked, in the least--to discover that Hastert and MOST of the GOP Congress member are child molesters or sexual deviants.

This is probably the reason why most of them stand around and do nothing while our Constitution is decimated, our soldiers die and our national debt explodes. They've all got sexual dirt on each other, and that buys the deafening silence.

So many times, there are great "Late Breaking News" Stories that
reveal the truth about these thugs. However, the stories are often from
very obscure blogs or publications.

I'm glad to see that a powerful publication is taking this scandal
seriously and reporting the truth.

It is excellent news to see that the MSM is not allowing these
pedophile enablers to emerge from this scandal, unscathed.

They deserve to suffer greatly.
