Same reason why we don't see any of the dead from Iraq. If there are no pictures, it doesn't count as much.

A while back I got to thinking about what the real plan was for the lack of response to Katrina. Think of this as the GOP anthem (not the one about diddling young boys, not the one about kicking their ass and taking their gas, the other other anthem)

kids that Wal-Mart hired to stay in their Long Beach, MS store during the storm to "protect" it. They all died. No one seems to know about it. This story must be told. I personally saw the "white bunny suit" teams behind the shell of the store looking for bodies. I have photos of them. And one of our heroic DUers who has spent so much of her time and energy down here after Katrina told me stories about what they found that would make your blood curdle - then boil in rage at how much value Wallyworld assigns to human life.

Please, if anyone in the Long Beach/Pass Christian area knows more about that particular tragedy, send me an IM. Their stories of dying for walmart should be told. The scenes I saw there (MS gulf coast) looked more like a post-atomic world than the USA.

K & R. So much of the Katrina (and Rita, for that matter) story hasn't been told. The Walmart story is awful. And what has really been done on the Gulf Coast? If you see photos of the areas hardest hit, they look just about the same as they looked a year ago. Can't this government do anything but help rich people? 14. Remeber, Hurricane Camille took 30+ years to rebuild from - and that was

when we had much more honest people rebuilding the state - locals helping one another, less corruption.. but it still took over 30 years to fully recover.

Look at Punta Gorda (before Charlie Punta Gorda rated in the top 10 best places to live) - still destroyed.

Here in Pensacola 2 years after Ivan there's still plenty of damage everywhere, including my condo building - but at least it's liveable. Too bad the board of directors have zero business acumen (except for the treasurer, I can't praise him enough). But it sucks living in an area where you know you could be nuked anywhewre, anytime each year during hurricane season. And now the the real estate bubble burst, it's a buyers market. The only advantage is my condo is maybe 5-10 minute drive to Pensacola NAS, so there's lots of militray folks who can rent if not buy. During the real estate frenzy we went ahead and got a 5th floor 2 bedroom waterfront unit that got flooded Ivans rain. We lost the roof of the building, lobby still looks like a bomb went off... it's a big mess. My advice to anyone thinking about buying coastal property: don't. Buy an RV, or camper, or book hotel rooms - do NOT buy waterfdront real estate. Especially in Florida, unless you enjoy $10,000+ yearly insurance premiums, with more rate hikes inevetible.

And then look at the stock tickers of the major insurance companies and tell me their record profits despite higher reinsurance rates justify their raping of Floridas homeoners.

If I could sell, I would and move back to N California in a second. I miss Davis, CA. College town, plenty of good food, culture, bike paths, wonderful public transportation.

Now, clearly, the devastation here is matched up and down the Gulf Coast. And that's what we're hearing that is so astonishing about this storm, versus Camille, which was a bit more focused, more laser- like and more intense in its destruction.

This was, like people are saying, a wall of water. This is the Mississippi -- Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama coast tsunami. And it's just hard to believe the devastation.

I will tell you that a couple blocks down to our left, we can -- we got some shots. We can see the back of a Wal-Mart that was on the beach in Pass Christian. We can see through the rear of the Wal-Mart, all the way to the oceanfront, to the water.

There is a very, very large drainage ditch that is behind it that is full of what had been inside the Wal-Mart: toys, refrigerators, tires, diapers. And we're sad to report that many of the neighbors -- and there is a guard who's watching that to try to prevent some of the looting -- they also report that there are some number of bodies in that culvert.

...Katrina, 9/11, doesn't matter...

...I am reminded of the Whittier-Narrows earthquake of 1 October 1987. I was a school photographer at the time, and, just before 7:42 a.m., my partner and I were setting up in an empty classroom, in an empty building, in a middle school in Norwalk, about three miles from what would be the epicenter of the 5.9 quake.

When it hit, my first thought was that there had been an explosion under us; the floor, the walls, the ceiling, the trees and telephone poles I could see through the windows, shook up and down -- suddenly, violently, in a way I'd never felt in more than a quarter-century of California quakes.

My partner (an older, very Christian lady whose husband was not at all cool with the fact that she was partnered with a white woman) and I instinctively dropped everything we were holding and dove for the lone doorway.

As we braced ourselves against opposite sides of the jamb (I with one foot planted up against the doorframe behind her), we held hands in a deathgrip. She prayed aloud, and I found myself mumbling along with her (what, I don't know; probably the Act of Contrition, since that's what I was conditioned to do at the moment of death). I wondered if her words would be the last sound I would hear over the rumble of the earth beneath us, and if her face would be the last thing I ever saw.

And yet, in all this, the only thought that was clear to me was this:

I wish I hadn't worn this shirt today. I don't like this shirt. I don't want the news photos of my body lying in the rubble to be in this shirt. I knew I should have worn a different shirt.

So, when I see these pictures, I think of the shirt I didn't want to die in -- and how I never wore it again.

And then I think:

When s/he got up that morning, and picked a shirt out of the closet, or drawer, could s/he ever have dreamt s/he would die in that shirt?

Did s/he think, "Oh, God, I don't want the news photos of my body lying in the rubble to be in this shirt"?

You can all call me crazy now, if you like. I thought that thinking this way was crazy for a long time -- until I realized, it's the tiny, most unspoken things that make the unreal all too real.

All they did that morning was get up, maybe have breakfast, and pick out what clothes to wear. And they never knew those would be the last clothes they would ever wear... alive.

They got up and went about their business, surely they were scared since they knew the storm was coming, and they boarded up their houses if they could the best they could, prayed they'd be alright, maybe decided to leave it in the hands of God, at some point they picked up the phone if they could to call 911 and got no answer or a busy signal.... Oh my Lord, does Bush have a lot to answer for. And Ms. Condi was shopping for shoes and getting dolled up for the Broadway show she was about to see.

If Bush & Co. had done NOTHING else, hadn't smeared war heroes and stolen elections, if they hadn't ignored all the warnings (written and face-to-face) and hadn't sat there like a muffin when the planes hit the towers, if they hadn't started this hellacious war without end, if they hadn't ripped off our seniors who need more affordable medicines, if they hadn't rendered and tortured people and sent them away for life with no day in court — if they hadn't done ANY of that, they would STILL BURN IN HELL for the victims of Katrina!

Those images made me remember a boy who drowned off the SC coast. I'll spare you the details. I can only imagine what it must have been like in NO, multiplying that one boy a thousand times over.

I normally wouldn't ever mention this but that photo struck a very deep chord in me.

It was my first day of doing body recoveries in NO when we were called to this scene and had to pick these 3 people up. It was a very emotional recovery and I will never forget that situation. There was a trooper there with the bodies when we arrived and after we finished loading them in our van, he said to me "Where are you from?" I said "NYC". He said "I just want you to know how much we appreciate you coming down here to help us out with this." I nodded not knowing how to respond but very grateful for his words and we went on our way.
