What's with all the hand-wringing over the N Korea nuke test?
Come on, folks - this is just another glowing example of the worldview of our impotent administration.

We cajoled the Chinese and Japanese to speak up at the 11th hour when the deal was all but done.

Expect to see much beating of breasts on this side of the pond, but nobody really gives a damn.

1. Coz this gives the Corporate media an excuse to go
TERRA TERRA TERRA!!! MUSHROOM CLOUD! MUSHROOM CLOUD! MUSHROOM CLOUD!

And the next resignation-worthy story disappears to the back page

3. I disagree. N Korea is a ratings killer. Sex and fraud sells.
It is all about marketing.

Nobody gives a shit about the Koreans.

25. I agree
the media will spend a day or two on this then it will be back to the repuke pagegate. People just love hearing about sex scandals that's what will bring in the high ratings. Nuclear bombs are boring and scary, people don't want to hear it.

26. Particularly when there's not a thing we can do about it
I had to laugh when I heard Snow's comment that we're going to the Security Council about this and will see about more sanctions. Who do BushCo they think they're kidding? N. Korea is already sanctioned up the ying yang. What's the UN gonna do, sanction the air they breathe?

11. Reasonable people don't.
You and I don't. Security Moms, on the other hand...? They voted for Dubya twice because he made them feel safer. They're a vacuous bunch, and the MSM are already asking their retired generals if this means American boots on the ground. I expect Busco to be in heavy spin mode by tomorrow morning, so we'll see. I hope you're right.

I can think of several other more demeaning things to call them, but won't for fear of the flame.

I remember how much it irritated me during the election. I mean, which moms don't care about their children's security?

7. I'd Pay A Visit With a Polairs Submarine
I'd send a note to Pyongyang..."Congrats on your new toy...next time you use it, we'll show you how a REAL toy works...just look of your shores at that submarine with several dozen MIRVs all programmed and ready to send...have a nice day"...

9. Nobody knows if they even did the test
Kim "I'm too Ill" is a nut case and has lied about events before. They claimed they did a test but the US says they cannot confirm seismic activity? The South Koreans have seismic AND sound technology and they also are not commenting?

This seems weird to me. With all of our technology we can't tell? Yet we can "confirm" all the nuke locations in Iran?

10. Even If They Did...So what...
OK...a nuke that is barely detectable? That's not much of a Nuke. And then so what. What could they do with one nuclear bomb? And a small one at that? Other than to show there's absolutely no tactical value for them to have this weapon and even if they do, what real harm can it do?

I'm more concerned about what's going on with the nuke program in Pakistan...a lot of the know-how in this bomb surely has Dr. Khan's name on it.

15. I agree to a certain extent Kharma
and one would assume that enough of the military in NK know that to prevent Kim from doing something supremely stupid. What scares me are the lunatics on this side of the pond giving orders to that SSBN from the oval office. The ones who are deluded into thinking ANY nuclear exchange won't end in utter disaster for this country and probably the world.

8. Everybody in the world's got nukes
BFD. Mutual deterrence. Don't the right wingers say that an armed society is a polite society? Maybe that goes for global society, as well. (only semi :sarcasm:)

13. People run in circles waving their arms when they're TOLD to run in
circles waving their arms.

If the US had changed the headlines to "North Korea to test Nukes" and they did and THEN said "It was a SUCCESS!" with happy faces and smilies, no one would have thought twice.

It's not like NK is going to attack the USA.

BUT, it's very clear that the USA wouldn't be so stupid as to attack North Korea.

18. Many of us haven't seen a "hot" arms race in our lives.
I wouldn't call it hand-wringing, but some interest is understandable, don't you think? NK's (non)threat to us isn't really the issue, it's that proliferation of nuclear weapons isn't a good thing, here or abroad. And that testing them can lead to no good. The land becomes toxic for many generations (the craters left at the Nevada Test Site are still wasteland) and I don't even want to think about the groundwater contamination. Then, as if that's not bad enough, sometimes the tests (which naturally means they don't know some of what's going to happen) breach the land, or cause aftershocks that disrupt the environment for months.

27. This could have been avoided.
The Busholini Regime thought that they could bully NK into giving up their Nuke Program. Instead of reaching an accord with NK the Busholini Regime played the tough guy game. NK and SK wanted a settlement and visitation for their people but the US Govt. strong armed SK into stopping that progress. The US Treasury sanctioned NK via banking. Instead of trying to work with NK everything was done to make them more paranoid and angry. Axis of Evil statement drove NK to get Nukes.
