1. USGS says NADA
Sorry, but I trust the USGS. They're not a partisan bunch and they say there has been no seismic activity on the Korean peninsula. 3.58 seems too significant for them to miss. NK isn't exactly known for being truthful.

4. South Korea made the report . . .
not all Koreans are the same. Kind of like all people who speak spanish are not necessarily mexican.

18. Still though, the rocks don't lie
And unless their is a concerted effort to shut the USGS up, the data do not support the South Korean claim.

3. BBC Also Says Its Confirmed - Fox Says Unconfirmed
The BBC refers to the evidence from South Korea:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/6032525.stm

"A South Korean official said an explosion had been detected in the north-east of North Korea, measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale."

Oddly, Fox News states, "North Korea Claims Test of Nuclear Weapon; U.S. Officials Can't Confirm," and contains no mention of the South Koreans detecting an explosion.

5. Even if it failed, they would report it as a success.
The Bush administration has demonstrated that as being a highly successful tactic.

6. The USGS has automated pages that show off all seismic activity worldwide
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 11:26 PM by DinoBoy
There has been nothing greater than a Mw 2.5 on the Korean Penninsula in over a week. I have no idea why SK geologists are saying this, but the rocks say nothing has happened.

ON EDIT: Now there does appear to be a Mw <4.0 in NE North Korea, three hours after the test supposedly happened... (supposedly 9:36 PM eastern time)

7. It doesn't make sense why SK would fake it...
Sure it got our attention for a few minutes, but if they faked it who is going to take them seriously?

12. I am so confused by this earthquake claim
Why make a fake claim like this if it's utimately so easy to identify as faked?

13. Sorry...
it just seems to me if it was fake much of the world would find out. Why would they give him anything knowing they faked a test?

I don't think SK faked it.

11. I know it doesn't make sense for SK to "fake it"
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 11:12 PM by DinoBoy
but unless someone is hacking into the USGS to block this earthquake, the rocks simply cannot lie. And honestly, it would be counterproductive to block out this information as the lack of any detected seismic activity at the world's premier earth sciences agency's website makes the whole thing look like a sham.

17. According to the USGS site, nothing under a 4.0 should appear on your map
"Latest Earthquakes Magnitude 2.5 or Greater in the United States and Adjacent Areas and Magnitude 4.0 or Greater in the Rest of the World - Last 7 days"

21. That's for the global map
The legend for the local maps has symbols down to a Mw 2.5.

Similar zoom in maps for the United States have earthquakes down to a Mw 1.0.

26. I can see the map legend, but no events under a 4.0 appear
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 11:30 PM by IDemo
There should be a number of smaller quakes in the more active regions, but none are displayed. Alaska, Washington, and California are fairly well blanketed, but the smallest I can see on a world 'drill-down' map is a 4.3 near Fiji...

14. Local news said no confirmation and that they may not be
able to detect it.

Bullshit. Not sure if I can tell you why, but trust me, it is bullshit.

I guess their polling told bush that NK exploding a nuke would be bad for the junta.

15. Gamma Ray emissions would tell us the honest truth
No way you're going to tell me that every appropriate spy satellite hasn't been aimed at North Korea this week. There should be no reason to guess whether they let off a nuke (although with mid-terms coming up, there are many reasons for BushCo to 'insinuate'...).

25. hmmm. will check it out.
Even if there was a test, if it is so dinky that it won't register, it is a fucking failure. Like a popcorn fart in a teakettle.
