10. He planned to visit NK but he didn't have the time.
If Gore had become president he would have gone himself. Bush of course dropped the issue much like he dropped counter-terrorism. Otherwise he is a national security expert. :banghead:

32. You are right
Clinton sent Carter there I believe. I'll have to research that. The trouble started in March, 2001. Even Andrea Mitchell admitted as much earlier this evening. Shocking I know.

2. Bush's been in power to long for that crap. What has he done for the
past six years?

The lesson of Iraq was to get nukes or else you could be invaded. NK and Iran know it.

34. What has Bush done for the last six years?
1. Slept through a warning about Osama planning to attack the US by slamming hijacked passenger jets into office buildings.
2. Stayed at a photo op as the attacks were taking place.
3. Made things up about Iraq being a threat and invading, knowing full well Iraq had nothing to do with the attacks.
4. Prepared and continues to prepare a strike against Iran, which will not have a nuclear weapons capability for several years.
5. Ignored North Korea, which was waving her nuclear capabilities like a red flag in front of a blind bull.

that they continued their nuclear program and, voila, the first test in decades by another insane despot.

6. Ignore them. As of tonight, they are no longer relevant, nor
are they a factor in either the November election nor the '08 election.

Bush and the Republicans are finished.

Fearless Leader packing a coal mine full of dyn-o-mite, and lighting it off.

It could be there was no radiation escaping because there was no radiation.....

...if you believe this is a partisan issue. This is all of "their" faults collectively, as far back as Carter. I know I'll be attacked for this being my first post, and that I mentioned Carter, but life's short.

My post referred to packing a coal mine full of dynamite, not partisanship.

21. Welcome on board!
Seems to me Clinton had these guys pretty well diffused. Personally, I think China is using NK as a proxy to distract Team Bush from their oily power plays in the ME. They are forcing Bush to pay attention to NK which is diffusing their rationale/justification to attack Iran and Syria. China has interests in that ME oil, too. I doubt that NK will do anything that would jeopordize their relationship with Beijing. But that's not to say they wouldn't rattle sabers on China's behalf.

27. Carter
If you don't like Carter, you should read a little about him. I lived through it and he was undone by the beginnings of this rethug revolution. The leftovers from nixon and the supporters of Reagan. Do you honestly believe all the crap the rethugs throw out about him. Read books people before they burn them all. This year may be our last chance.

17. It Was Bill Richardson The Koreans Called To Negotiate
This stupid regime's "axis of evil" shit is to blame. North Korean gave up their Nukes (like Libya claims it has) and Albright and Richardson had helped to end its isolation...that would have made it a lot easier for us to neutralize the country. Now booosh has emboldened countries over the world that an act of defiance against the U.S. is looked on as good thing. This show how low our standing in the world has gone...thanks to the booosh cabal.

I really don't even know how to respond. How long does a nuke take to build? I'm not blaming Clinton, just not excusing him, and many others. This is a problem that goes beyond parties.

What does that mean?

The problem is not talking to a country in order to punish them DOES NOT WORK. This test proves it. Bush's foreign policy is a failure...just like everything else in his miserable excuse of an administration.

Please don't limit his failures to his admin. Every venture he ever had was a failure, with some being bailed out by the saudi prince he was holding hands with. Probably had to bribe his way onto the cheer leading squad in college.

19. Why did we even need a president after Clinton
apparently Bush can't do jack shit and is completely blameless.

This seems to indicate that Clinton was to have taken care of everything, including every possible thing that might come up after he left office.

So why do we even need Bush?

What exactly is he doing?

23. Of course they're blaming Clinton
Why would anybody look at a right wing board for serious news or opinion?

Maybe in a few years somebody will make a revisionist movie about how Clinton was too distracted with Monica to pay any attention to what Kim Jong Il was doing.

The fact remains that this happened six years into Bush's watch. The fact reamins that we've been fed a line why Iraq, which had no weapons, and Iran, which is years away from having them, are threats that need to be dealt with immediately and North Korea, which tested a nuke this evening, is no threat at all.

30. IMHO
Japan will not build a nuke because they know we have plenty. If they wanted too I'm sure they could whip one up and it would be smaller and more efficient then anyone else's.

33. What is the point of your post?
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 12:38 AM by Jack Rabbit
First of all, this thread is about the knee-jerk right wing spin that everything is Clinton's fault. It is absurd to blame things happening six years into Bush's watch on Clinton. Why not just blame them on Herbert Hoover?

Nuclear proliferation is undesirable. Yet Bush's reckless war policies have promoted it.

of events:

I found a timeline of sorts regarding what Clinton did vs what Bush did--in the very beginning of Clinton's Administration ("Those bozos know less about foreign policy than my dog Millie"--was how I think Bush the Elder put it) the President was listening to the IAEA and took the Nuclear situation seriously. When inspections were stopped, they worked to get inspectors back in and succeeded.

http://www.espionageinfo.com/Ne-Ns/North-Korean-Nuclear-Weapons-Programs.html

<clip> In 1992, under threat of possible United States action, North Korea agreed to an IAEA-monitored NPT Safeguards Agreement. IAEA monitoring and inspections start soon after the U.S. informed North Korea that it would impose sanctions if North Korea does not permit full international inspections of its nuclear facilities. (snip)

To break the impasse, the United States started direct negotiations with North Korea and entered into a Framework Agreement in October 1994. Under the Agreed Framework the United States pledged to provide fuel for electrical generation and aid in the construction of limited use reactors in exchange for a North Korean freeze and eventual dismantlement of reactors capable of producing weapons grade materials (e.g., graphite-moderated reactors and related facilities). As a consequence of the agreement, the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) was formed to facilitate fuel shipments to North Korea.

An important and direct consequence of the agreed framework between the United States and North Korea was the return of IAEA inspectors to monitor the freeze. IAEA inspectors returned to Yongbyon and related facilities, including the partially built 50 and 200MW nuclear power plants. Immediately following the return of IAEA monitoring teams, friction developed between inspectors and North Korean authorities. Over a span of six years, nearly 20 technical conferences failed to produce North Korean cooperation in resolving key monitoring issues.

When things got similarly hot for the Bush team, they were too preoccupied with Iraq to devote the appropriate time and effort to N. Korea, and sadly, N korea was closer to nuclear success. They gambled that they'd have time to do their thing in Iraq (because we'd have so much help from the candy and flower-throwing greatly relieved and happy Iraqi people, don't you know) but wouldn't you know--we're still there.

And we're still in Afghanistan, only now we're happy to consider having the Taliban (the Osama-shielders and Islamofascist womenhating whatever the right-wing blogs used to say) back--oh and we never did catch Osama.

But in the meantime, Kim Jong Il, who is a pretty big bad dictator, has got the bomb. And no, Iraq didn't have WMD, seems that capability was pretty much reduced in the 1998 strikes against them by...the Clinton Administration. And all the repukes cried "Wag the Dog."--

Thank you very much. As Dean Martin put it, "As the fly said walking across a mirror, that's one way of looking at it."

(Edit because, damnit, the bit I meant to copy and paste wasn't that freaking long...I have fumble fingers today).
