Woodward: Cheney Hanging up on Him is a "Metaphor For What's Going On"!
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 10:00 AM by leftchick
Did you all catch this on Meet The presstitutes with timmy yesterday? I thought this was an excellent point Woodward made. It would have been nice if timmy had acted like a real interviewer and asked a follow up question with Bob.....

<snip>

MR. WOODWARD: The vice president called me I guess as it was coming out 10 days ago.

MR. RUSSERT: And?

MR. WOODWARD: Well, he called to complain that I was quoting him about the meetings with Henry Kissinger that he and the president had. I had interviewed Vice President Cheney last year a couple of times at length about material I’m gathering on the Ford administration, on-the-record interviews, but he volunteered, he said, “Oh, by the way, Henry Kissinger comes in” and he, Dick Cheney, sits down with him once a month and the president every two or three months. And Cheney was upset I was quoting him. And I said, “Look, this—on-the-record doesn’t have anything to do with Ford, you volunteered that.” He then used a word which I can’t repeat on the air. And I said, “Look, on the record is on the record,” and he hung up on me.

MR. RUSSERT: What, what do you mean, he swore at you?

MR. WOODWARD: He, he said what I was saying was bull-something.

MR. RUSSERT: Let me turn to Tony...

MR. WOODWARD: No, but he, but he hung up. Now, look, I can, I can see, I went back and looked at the transcript that he can—ever had a disagreement about ground rules with someone. Have you?

MR. RUSSERT: Well, he thought he was talking, he thought he was talking to you for one project and you used it in another project.

MR. WOODWARD: Well, exactly. But it had nothing to do with it, and it’s clearly spelled out that it’s an on-the-record interview. And so—now, what does he do instead of saying, “Well, OK, I look at it this way, you look at it that way.” It’s a metaphor for what’s going on. Hang up when somebody has a different point of view or information you don’t want to deal with.

4. Well, it's interesting the things that come out of peoples' mouths
inadvertently, say, when trying to explain something else--like this situation with Cheney on the phone.

"Its a metaphor for what's going on. Hang up when somebody has a different point of view..."

What I gather from this is that Woodward's bushwhacked brain has been trying to recover from all those hours, and days and months and agonizing years, of hanging out with liars, torturers, murders and thieves. As a writer (good, bad, indifferent--doesn't matter), his mind has been trying to formulate an overarching description of what he's been through, and seen and heard. "It's a metaphor for what's going on." He's been searching for that--perhaps unconsciously--The Metaphor. And here it is--brought into consciousness sort of sideways, trying to explain Cheney's refusal to acknowledge the agreed upon ground rules. "Hang up when somebody has a different point of view." A metaphor means that OTHER things are being referred to. Hang up on the French. Hang up on the British. Hang up on the Germans. Hang up on the South Koreans. Hang up on the North Koreans. Hang up on the U.S. military. Hang up on the CIA. Hang up on the American people.

Have a little pity for Woodward, for just getting it. Think of him as a Christian martyr. He voluntarily placed himself in this pit of vipers. He's had hundreds of roiling snakes squeezing the life out of him and poisoning him. But he manages to scream one message up to the living: The Bush Junta is STONE DEAF TO *EVERYBODY*!

Not a terribly comforting message, but instructive.

Now we can understand how Cheney keeps saying that they are going to win in November. What does Cheney's total deafness tell us?

Throw Diebold, ES&S and all election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor' NOW!

Bust the Machines--Vote by Absentee Ballot this November!

5. extremely well put PP!
Imagine Woodwards absolute horror at that affront! Cheney hung up on him! After all of the years of inside information, schmoozing with them, and all of that access?? It must have been an actual epiphany for him!

6. Ok, I'm trying to imagine this, but I keep picturing Robert Redford...
It's very distracting!

I need to see this on video. From the transcript, he seems really incensed that Cheney hung up on him, which seems funny. I guess I would have thought that after running from parking garages he'd kinda laugh off getting hung up on...
