I read in a report that when President Clinton left office there were about 15,000 food inspectors. Now bush has only about 500. I don't know if it is politics or corporate greed. By corportations not wanting to be policed because it cost them more money.

Because if they don't protect our food supply it won't be protected at all.
Companies have NO incentive to protect our food supply because it drives up cost. Sure, if every company except one or two protected the food supply then the few exceptions would be forced to by liability concerns. But as long as all companies are driven by profit motives to keep things as cheep as possible they would all cut corners, ignore safety concerns, and bribe legislators to make sure they can't be held liable. That would be the most cost effective option for them. So, surprise surprise, that is what they often attempt to do.
The FDA was created, in fact, because businesses were not protecting our food supply.
