Poll: Majority think Hastert should resign
Poll: Majority think Hastert should resign

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A majority of Americans believe the scandal over former Rep. Mark Foley's contacts with teenage congressional pages should cost House Speaker Dennis Hastert his leadership post, according to a CNN poll released Monday.

The poll, conducted Friday through Sunday by Opinion Research Corporation, found that 52 percent of the 1,028 adults interviewed think Hastert should step aside. Only 31 percent said they think he should keep his post, and 17 percent had no opinion.

1. What do we know though?
Republicans (Bush especially) consider polls "focus groups" and irrelevant to how they choose to govern. I think Bush has gotten away with claiming polls are bogus and that dissenting Americans don't count because the asshole knows the real polls, the ones that count, are rigged every November.

4. If someone asked me if I thought a politician from another district

should resign, for whatever reason, I would say "Yes". That is the way people think. If another Congressman resigns, then my Congressman moves up another notch, and until I get disgusted with him, I have to support him. That is why you get people like Strom Thurmond getting consistently re-elected, beyond senility. As Speaker of the House, I consider Hastert to be another replaceable bureaucrat currently controlling the apparatus of government. The world did not fall apart when Newt Gingrich disappeared. These people have overestimated their importance to a large degree.
