What will DU be like during the 2008 primaries?
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 04:09 PM by Ignacio Upton
While I didn't post here during the '04 primaries, I've read that the whole board was ablaze with civil war between the most vocal supporters of the candidates (mainly Dean and Clark supporters, with Kerry, Edwards, and Kucinich supporters also consistuting a presence, but lesser ones.)
Thankfully the board isn't like that now, as we aren't in the middle of primary season...but once November 8th rolls around the dust has settled for 2006, 2008 will be one of the things on DUer's minds (besides, hopefully, Speaker Pelosi launching investigations into the administration's bullshit.) Personally, I think that the dynamics of the primaries' impact on DU will depend on whether or not Hillary runs. While there will be snipping between the various supporters of candidates who will strive to be the "anti-Hillary," I think that Hillary would actually unify DUers against her, which would create unity and division simoultaneously. However, if she doesn't run (hopefully this will be our best scenario) then I wouldn't be surprised if the 2008 primary season is a replay of 2004's. I could easily see flame wars between Clark, Warner, Feingold, Kerry, and Edwards supporters engulfing DU (I don't expect any of the other potential candidates to generate as much enthusiasm on this site as the five I mentioned.) OTHO, there is one difference between 2004 and 2008: right-wing sites like Free Republic will also be going through civil war, as supporters of people like McCain (if there are any pro-McCain Freepers left) Brownback, Frist, Romney, and Giuliani, will duke it out and give Jim Robinson a headache.

(Note: Please don't use this thread to start a flame war in promoting your candidate. The purpose of this thread is to talk about the general trends that may happen in a year from now.)

1. We should have open honest heated and passionate
discussions about all the candidates. Fight like hell in the primaries and join together in the general election. May the best candidate win.

11. I think that sums it up nicely.
It got really, really, really ugly. Lots of "STFU" challenges, many self-proclaimed "experts," lots of freeper trolls, and the vast majority of DUers stuck in the middle, attempting civility.

People are gonna be a LOT uglier after TWO terms of Bush than they were after ONE. It's four more years of damage, four more years of slipping away from the ideals that built this country.

"...as bad or worse than in '04..." That's what it will be like.

:patriot:

13. FR will be engulfed in its own civil war
So I'm not sure if those trolls will have enough time to come over here. If FR is engaged in a civil war, I plan on fanning its flames.

3. Actually, a lot of DUers won't be online then...
They'll all be down at the docks waving bye-bye to * and his gang of thugs and cutthroats, in orange jumpsuits and shackles, as they prepare to set sail for The Hague aboard a special UN prison ship. And who really thought impeachment was off the table! }(

(Don't worry...we'll all be back in time to vote! :D)

7. Well, will President Pelosi decide to run for a full term?
Or will she decide to act as a care-taker, arguing that she needs to manage the country and is too busy to campaign.

14. I don't know...We'll have to await her "charm offensive..."
...and see what nicknames she gives to public officials and members of the press.

Those should be indicators...

5. You don't think Al Gore would generate enthusiasm?
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 04:22 PM by impeachdubya
Gee, whiz. How come he kicks everyone else's ass in every poll that he's included in?

Not to start a flame war, or anything. But I always find it interesting when people lay out their list of "popular contenders" and inexplicably leave him off.

8. If Gore runs, then I don't think we'll see an '04 repeat
I think that most DUers would unite behind him. Although the second he says something about an issue that they disagreed with him about in 2000 (like NAFTA) then you'll hear the Naderite cries of "Gush and Bore" again.

Although I have no doubt that this time around, if he runs, Al will run a better campaign.

All told, though, it seems to me he's the obvious choice.
