What to do with freeper troll who posts hate speech under your name?
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 11:01 PM by civildisoBDence
Ah, the joy of trolls. There's a freeper troll at HuffPo who's been posting hate speech (against gays, Jews, and US troops) using my name as his screen name. He sometimes includes my email address, and sometimes my home phone number.

He's a clever one, hoping to defame me by demeaning others.

On the one hand, I'm flattered to be the target of this troll, but on the other, his goal is to associate me with hate speech.

Has anyone here ever had to deal with this kind of (ever so rare) clever troll?

3. Continue to take the high road.
No matter what. Let HP know what's going on and change your user name and password.

Why is this person going after you?

8. You're right, of course
HuffPo doesn't publish any contact info or reply to any complaints. And he doesn't need my username or password--he just created an account using my name as his username.

Believe it or not, it started as a flame war almost four years ago that he can't let go of. He insulted my mother, and I retaliated in kind. Damn testosterone!

4. I'm no lawyer
but I think you may actually have a legal case against this person.

7. That's what I thought too, identity theft.
I would think there'd be criminal as well as civil charges a person could bring against them. Huff Post would probably be happy to give out the IP address of the person posting it.

9. Better to turn the other cheek than involve lawyers
Butt cheek, of course.

13. This is going to sound harsh, but...
...you'll have to decide whether you really want this guy to stop or not. He obviously thinks it's really funny to post your phone number and try to get you harassed. He will probably think it's funny to do that to someone else later. Getting other people mad at him is unlikely to make him stop thinking it's funny. Suing him for an uncomfortable sum will, and will also serve to deter others.

14. Maybe so but
at the very least a letter from a lawyer would most likely scare the crap out of this guy and make him change his behavior in the future.

5. well...honestly man...

If someone was spreading my personal info on the net, I wouldn't go on the net spreading his...<btw, his name is J*** T****.......> You kinda kill the whole moral superiority thing and hurt any chances of filing charges since you are engaging in the same immature behavior that you are complaining about...

weirdness alert on edit....

And here's the irony of ironies: his blog is called RandomActOfKindness.com. (Seriously--I couldn't make this up!) He uses the blog to defame me and takes pleasure in the fact that the defamation comes up on top of a google search. I could retaliate on my own sites, but that would destroy their integrity.

So you want to destroy the integrity of this site?

am I missing something?

just my two cents...

10. Point well taken...
...but I think you're missing a sense of proportionality.

I'll edit as appropriate--thanks.

6. Here's a good defense.
a) buy a domain name and website, with any old name. Use the name of that website as your user name on all sites, so nobody can be confused about what you represent, they just go to your site.
2) Also, set up your email to be at this site, so any hatemailers can see your website that your email is on before sending pissed off emails. This also lets you USE the freeper as a means of publicity of your message.
3) complain to the site owners where your personal information such as phone number, address, or name are abused, because I think this may be legally covered. (abusing your user name is not)

17. I can kind of relate...
...there's some yahoo at CU who uses my screen name (from DU). I just figure eventually most thinking folks can figure out we are NOT the same person. If not, well...

I remember seeing it the first time, though. It's jarring for lack of a better word. :-(
