What was Foley using to lure these kids with?
It certainly wasn't his Hollywood looks. And I admit I ain't so handsome myself, so this is not a thread making fun of Foleys looks.

He had to be offering these kids something more than booze and sex to keep their interest in this old dude. I am 51 so I can call him old.

What was it? Money? Travel? Jobs? Something else?

Don

3. His power! Haven't you ever seen bosses lure employees
into relationships and the employees are awed by their power?

5. Obviously most of these pages want to be politicians one day. Perhaps he
promised to help them out and show them how politics works. A high schooler dedicated enough to be there in the first place is not one to miss such an opportunity.

That is what he took advantage of.

7. Foley's former chief of staff became the NRCC chair's own chief.
You can't deny Foley had serious connections in Congress, which he was allowed to keep, and exploit, and subtly abuse for his own personal objectives, because he was useful to those in power (such as Tom DeLay). The power wasn't fake. For a homosexual page, that power would have been quite real and provided the promise of reaching a station in politics far higher than might otherwise have been possible. Bait on the lure.

8. hello...a future?
wow, i honestly shouldn't have to explain it, but i guess since your name is "don" you are a man

i am not a man and like most women of our general age, i have experienced sexual harassment, it sort of came with the territory back then and it was invariably the case that women who got the cool high-paying jobs were married to, fucking, or the daughters of the powerful -- hence one of the reasons women without such contacts finally washed their hands of the feminist movement, since all it was doing was giving rich powerful men more avenues to place more family members and fucktoys in the great jobs that supposedly ALL of us were working toward

it's pretty obvious what foley offered, the right for the boys to keep on going and achieve the bright futures their early achievement put within reach, the trouble is -- as any woman victimized by a sexual harasser can explain to you -- once you have been harassed and complained instead of complying, YOU are the trouble-maker, YOU are the one w. no future

do you seriously think the boy who complained to rodney alexander will ever get another job in politics? please, it is to laugh

victims of sexual harassment are not whores, they don't get any goodies when they submit, all they get is the right to keep working toward what they have EARNED

those who don't submit have no future and will end up in a back lot somewhere selling used cars

that's what foley was offering

what's sad is that foley would be put in prison if the boys were 15, yet the destruction of an entire future is just as bad when you are 16 or 18 or 21, people this powerful have NO business hitting on people who can't say no because of their power

it may not be illegal but he has poisoned their entire future

i wish i believed in goddess because she would have a special place to fry his creepy ass

there are lots of young people who are interested in sexual adventures with older people but keep it out of the freaking work place, how hard is that

jeff gannon is actually way less offensive to me, he was willing to sell, and the white house was willing to buy, quite a different situation from a young boy who will now never get his dream job because "oh he's a disloyal tattletale, you know"

ok, sorry, rant over

11. That page will "sleep well at night" knowing that he didn't give in....
...and, in fact, stood up for what is 'good, right, and true'....THAT always trumps the stoopid lumps who "give-in" and make it harder for the rest of us ultimately.

..........

Also, I disagree with your statement "there are lots of young people who are interested in sexual adventures with older people" (no there aren't, don't delude yourself!!!! If any young people are interested in older people it's b/c they (younger ones) think they can gain some advantange. Otherwise, there is no good explanation for such a 'leaning')

Peace,

12. Contacts with others on the Hill. Favoritism from a powerful guy
who knows a lot of people and can make phone calls, etc. as they try to build their careers. That's why he shouldn't have abused his relationship with these young men.

13. I didn't think he was bad looking and he dresses very well...Seems
Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 11:29 PM by KoKo01
like he could be charming in a diabolical way and maybe the pages thought he was funny. A man maybe older than their fathers trying to chat them up?

I don't think 16 year olds are innocent these days the way they were years ago. So, it could have been some thought his advances were kind of funny thinking "what the hell?" "I'll play a few e-mail games with this guy...because it could help my future." Then it got out of hand and I think that it became kind of freaky/scary when he started to get into the sex stuff that was too personal.

His charm and powerful position might have thrown some of the pages off guard even though they were warned to watch out for him. Who would think that Congressman would go that far past being "friendly" to become a predator?

Says to me that much of Congress and the Senate needs to be cleaned out if this is the kind of power madness that goes on that can be covered up for years. DC is so insular who the hell knows what else is going on that we couldn't have imagined. Most of what we know is so bad one can't imagine anything worse...but I'll bet the Repugs have done what we can't yet imagine, too.

17. Political career. Obviously!
Those kids are desperate to get ahead in Washington -- most of them, anyway. And everyone back home has been telling them, Network, network, network! So they think, well... is this how it's done?

18. Implied job security.
That's what makes sexual harassment evil. The minute your boss hits on you, there's an implied threat, whether the horny boss means it or not.
