Is the Stephanie Miller show only 45 minutes long?
Edited on Tue Oct-10-06 09:59 AM by Atman
I tuned in at 9:00 via her web site, and the program didn't even start until 9:07 -- just seven minutes of "Wild Thing." They did a long break about 20 minutes in, and at 10:00 they went into a looong commercial break. When they came back they just repeated the stuff that already aired at 9:00. Why do I even bother listening? Over ten minutes of this "program" is a horribly grating tape loop of one beat from "Wild Thing." If this is what people generally get when they tune into Air America, no wonder its in trouble!

Stephanie Miller is not employed by Air America.

7. And this addresses my question how?
I know that...but she is carried on many stations as part of their "Air America" block, ie, WKOX in Boston which I get if I click the DU link. Same shit happens. But why does her own site not have a complete, current stream?

11. You took a misguided swipe at AAR.
If you're listening to a seemingly endless bump of "Wild Thing", you are not listening to AAR. So to conclude what you did in your OP is way off-base.

I'm listening from her website, as are other people here, who are not having problems. Wish I could help you out with your problem.

4. It must be a problem on your end.
I listen through her website and don't have any problems. I get all 3 hours.

And Stephanie Miller is not part of Air America.

6. I am listening to it FROM HER OWN SITE!
What problem could there be? I don't understand how her site could be streaming one program but the on-air is broadcasting something entirely different!

9. I'm listening from her website too.
The show is live and at the bottom of the second hour.

Maybe you just need to close out the media player and click on the streaming link again.

I listen to her from the ktlk streaming site, where she wbroadcasts from. Much more bandwidth and reliablility there.

5. If you're streaming from her website, you're not listening to
a radio station, which is why you get the music as filler and not the News at the top of the hour.

8. That still isn't the question
I understand what and why the filler is there. I only mention it because it sucks, but that still is not really germane...where the hell can I listen to the entire three hours if her own site just repeats after 45 minutes? I've been logged in since 9:00 am, so I missed nothing.

12. It could have been a technical glitch
In any case, you can tune into one of the streams of stations that carry her instead of her own website.

13. Her show doesn't repeat on her website.
It's live all 3 hours. It might be a glitch in the media player. Just reclick on the streaming link and it should be live.

14. The breaks are normal
Most radio shows don't actually start until 5-7 minutes after the hour (for a break of ~10 minutes), have soft breaks at ~20 and ~50 minutes after (these can be shifted by the show host/producer), and a hard break (can't be shifted) at the bottom of the hour (lasting ~7 minutes). This is so local stations can have time for news and commercials.

Don't know about your repeating problem, as I've been listening to her show regularly for a couple of years now (streaming) and have never had that problem.

17. I have encountered it every single time I've listened, without exception
I posted about this previously, and several posters reported similar problems. This morning, though, apparently I'm alone. I have tried listening via the DU link, same thing. Her site, same thing. Other stations, same thing. I'm baffled. I have a relatively new computer will all the updates on everything, including the various media players. Miller's show has never worked properly for me. It always repeats itself, sometimes in as little as twenty minutes. When I listen from her site, the time stamps never match the real time...she just reporte, for instance, that it is "24 minutes after the hour." It is 10:55. Not even close to "24 minutes after." I just don't get it!

BTW, my apologies for the snarkiness. I appreciate those who are offering suggestions, really I do. But I've received some strange replies to posts this morning, totally ignoring the substance of my post to make side-comments that aren't germane at all, and I guess I'm just getting a little annoyed.

15. no problem with the stream here......
btw, I'm sure it's just a spelling error, but it's not "Air American". I enjoy Air America, and as far as it being in trouble, it's my understanding that they're not the only ones, I think it may be the nature of the industry.

18. T Roosevelt is correct
I really get peeved when someone rips on AAR when they don't know what they are talking about. EVERY syndicated radio program starts at about 6 minutes after the hour. Why? Because the local stations carry national news, traffic, weather and local commercials. It is just the way synidcated radio works.

If you listen to syndicated programs online then you may get music, commercials, news, or even dead-air for that time.

You also may get dead-air during the shows commercial breaks at around 17, 30 and 50 past the hour.

Nobody is ripping you off of progressive talk time. It is the way the industry works for all the talk shows.

22. Good thing I never said any of those things!
Jesus, where to people come up with this stuff? How many times to I have to explain that I understand how radio works? In fact, I used to be an on-air fill-in "personality" for the morning show on WRNX in Western Mass, and did their advertising and some voice-overs and commercials, too. I know about radio. My issue isn't with how radio works. It is about getting a current, constant stream of Stephanie Miller's show!

They moved from Amherst to Springfield, and increased their power. I live close to Hartford now, and I can still pick it up most of the time.

I think it's still one of the last privately owned, non-Corporate radio stations in New England. They play whatever they want, without regard to genre, which is awesome. When I worked for them, the emphasis was on playing "anything that didn't suck." They did hire a consultant at one point, who suggested more Rolling Stones and Elton John. He claimed all adults like to hear RS and EJ, so the Tom, the owner, put 'em into the rotation, and you're generally guaranteed to hear at least one RS or EJ 'hit' every hour, unfortunately. Other than that, it is still very progressive, still triple A for the most part.

BTW, here is one of two billboards I did for them...

19. I've never had problems listening to the direct stream from her site -
They always play the "Wild Thing" loop from X:00 to X:05, followed by the musical intro to the show (Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It") every hour. You should be hearing "Right-Wing World" in the opening of the first hour, "Stand-Up News" in the opening of the second hour, and "Tinsel Talk" early in the third hour. There have to be some technical issues if you're not getting those segments in that order...

20. You must be having difficulty with your stream
If your stream is interrupted or weak, and you have frequent urges, see your doctor.

Stephanie's show is three hours long and full of Stephalicous Goodness(tm).

21. It appears, after some tinkering, that Safari reloads the cache if...
...there is a brief break in the stream. Instead of re-connecting to the stream, it appears to just reload the cached file. I figured this out by switching back to WXKS/WKOX in Boston (the DU link) just in time for the 11:00 news break and it was a different stream, but then a brief pause...and the news started all over again. I refreshed the page, and the same news started over again. It did this a couple of times. So I emptied the cache, re-clicked the link, and same news still started once again! It didn't finally correct itself until I quit Safari and emptied the cache again, twice. Then I got a fresh, live stream.

So Safari sucks, I guess. But if I listen with Firefox, opening the stream in a different window, I wind up experiencing a 2-3 second delay in response to clicks and scrolling. That is what made me start listening via Safari in the first place, so I could browse with Firefox, while Safari streamed the audio.

Oh well. It seems to be working now, after WAY TOO MUCH hoop-jumping!

We'll see how long it lasts.

Thanks again, most of you!

But I way prefer Stephanie Miller in the morning than anything AAR has to offer. But then at noon, Al Franken comes on, and his show just drives me nuts. I can't listen.

32. Your affiliate is probably having problems with the feed.
I've had it happen in my area when they are having problems connecting to the feed. Then all kinds of strange things happen as you have described and even reruns from other shows interspersed to fill the time.
