'Danger bonus' for war zone troops
Press Association
Tuesday October 10, 2006 3:48 PM

Soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq will get a cash "danger bonus" to wipe out their tax bill, it was revealed.

Prime Minister Tony Blair said providing extra money was the "fair thing to do", as he admitted military operations in the Middle East had proved far tougher than expected.

He said: "This recent campaign in Afghanistan, which is absolutely vital for our security and the broader security of the region and the world, has brought home to us that our troops... are facing dangers and facing a type of conflict that a few years back they were unlikely to face. And I think it's important we recognise that."

1. Now, I read that article not one hour ago...

and the body indicated that the British troops require a bonus to bring them around to what is NORMAL for American troops, which is, they pay no taxes for any money earned while deployed in a war zone. In fact, there was controversy recently about people being denied this bonus on account of being seriously wounded and evacuated to Germany for recovery, where danger pay suddenly ceased. (This however, is not a subject touched upon in the article quoted above.)

3. Pay for U. S. servicemembers in a combat zone is not taxed
They also get combat zone pay and possibly per diem. Unless, of course, that has all changed in the past ten years.
