Why does Bush II get the free pass that Bush I didn't get?

What has changed so dramatically in this country over the last decade? I am no fan of Bush I, but he wasn't even close to as bad as his dangerous idiot son. Yet the voters had soured on Bush I well before his presidency was over. The "read my lips" episode pretty much sunk Bush I, but that was nothing compared to Bush II's epic crimes and blunders.

part of the explanation is the rise in power and influence of the so called "Religious Right", and their heavy influence on the Republican Party. These ass hats worship Shrub, and I think that they truly believe he is God sent. I'm an agnostic myself, and so I don't buy into all of the "Christian" End Times scenarios.
