Help. Where should my client put her money? Congressional elections.
I have a client who has 'a little bit' of money to donate to a campaign. She would like to use it wisely.

Who should she give it to?

(We live in Lynn Woolsey's district, no sense giving it locally -- Lynn will win hands down, she always does.)

Please if you have any stats, or info abt the candidate, please include.

1. Patty Wetterling, 6th D. MN
This is a leans republican district. Patty is an amazing candidate who has run a strong campaign against negative ads and against Michelle Bachman--a goper who made her name fighting against the paper tiger of gay marriage. see http://dumpbachmann.blogspot.com/2006/10/michele-bachmann-what-is-equal.html

Patty is about 3 points back but is moving up. Please donate!

2. I like looking at information myself. Here's a couple sources
Fundraising (so you know which campaigns are struggling for funding)
http://www.cqpolitics.com/images/Fundraising-House.pdf
http://www.cqpolitics.com/images/Fundraising-Senate.pdf

Recent polling data for house
http://constituentdynamics.com/mw/2006/pdf/racesummary.pdf

Recent polling data for governor and senate
http://www.pollster.com/

I like Wulsin OH (taking on mean jean Schmidt)
There's McNernty CA (taking on Pombo)

I'd try Ford in Tennessee (really want that Senate seat)

In Michigan (08?) Marcinkowski is a long shot but a liberal Democratic convert from Republican. CIA, FBI, Navy (dying for money but great creds and the type of person we want in Congress)

7. Ok but I have to ask: she's in Utah -- any chance of her winning?
Or am I just being Utah-prejudiced?

15. its a race for the state legislature...
the legislature in Utah is about 25% Dem so I'm not sure one seat here will make any difference.

IMHO, put your money in race for national office...one where money will make the difference.

17. Very good chance of her winning actually. The incumbent is not
running and the R that is has major morality issues that actually got him out of office in the first place. Besides that, Park City is in her district (extremely liberal) and this is her 3rd run so she has name recognition. ALSO, she has raised more than twice as much money than the last election and twice as much as her opponent. :)

4. Bruce Braley - IA
Edited on Thu Oct-12-06 07:43 PM by SharonAnn
Bruce Braley in Iowa. He's fighting to take over a Republican seat in the House of Representatives. http://www.brucebraley.com/

He's liberal, unequivocal about a woman's right to choose, and is managing to stay barely in front of his opponent in the polls.

He could use the help.

It's my hometown (Waterloo, IA) and leans liberal though the area around it leans conservative. They have a long tradition of electing both Democrats and Republicans.

Put your money here! It will make a difference and help us pick up a House Seat.

And he's a great guy. Read the article "Helping a 12 yr old through cancer" on his website.

8. Ned Lamont, perhaps?
I mean, Lieberman is a ghoul celebrated by Hannity, Coulter, and Cheney, who's so arrogant he's demanding Conn. hand him his Senatorial throne back even after his own party genuinely said he stank and ousted him fair and square--and he manages to be ahead!

10. Lois Murphy (D) in Pennsylvania.
Edited on Thu Oct-12-06 07:53 PM by Eric J in MN
"PA-06: Murphy (D) 52%--46% Gerlach (R)" -Constituent Dynamics

That is close enough to give since Republicans have had a better turnout operation recently.

We really need Missouri and she's a great candidate, and Karl Rove has targeted Missouri with extra money and that's enough reason for me.

14. Congressional Quarterly lists 15 currently R seats that could go either
Edited on Thu Oct-12-06 08:27 PM by ProgressiveEconomist
Congressional Quarterly lists 15 currently R seats that could go

either way in their "triage" (actually, "septage") of House races.

From http://www.cqpolitics.com/risk_rating_house.html :

"Republican -- no clear favorite

Colo. 7 -- Beauprez*
Conn. 4 -- Shays
Fla. 22 -- Shaw

Ill. 6 -- Hyde*
Iowa 1 -- Nussle*
Ind. 2 -- Chocola

Ind. 9 -- Sodrel
Minn. 6 -- Kennedy*
N.C. 11 -- Taylor

N.Y. 20 -- Sweeney
N.Y. 24 -- Boehlert*
Ohio 18 -- Ney*

Pa. 6 -- Gerlach
Pa. 10 -- Sherwood
Wash. 8 -- Reichert"

* = Open seat

For the website URL of the Democratic challenger, see the relevant state's general election link at http://www.thegreenpapers.com .

18. You could refine that list even more with info from thegreenpapers
on the amount of money the Democrat and the Republican have raised in each of the 15 races.

For the most leverage, I'd put my money on a Democratic David running even with a Republican Goliath. With even just a few thousand dollars from your client and others, crucial radio and local TV spots could get the message out and help get committee control and subpoena power back for Nancy Pelosi and the rest of our crew.

The Republicans STILL are running ahead in "safe" and "leaning" seats, according to CQ.
