Iran calls on nuclear powers to disarm

TEHRAN — Iran, itself accused by the west of seeking to make atomic bombs, said yesterday it was against any country possessing such weapons after North Korea announced it had conducted an underground nuclear test.

“Iran is against the use and production of nuclear weapons. No country is competent to use nuclear weapons,” government spokesman Gholamhossein Elham told a weekly news conference, when asked about North Korea’s nuclear test.

The west accuses Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons under a civilian programme. Iran insists it needs nuclear energy to satisfy its booming electricity demand.

Elham reiterated that Iran had no intention of building nuclear weapons. “Iran’s atomic work is transparent. It should not be considered as a thereat,” Elham said. All nuclear powers should start disarming, he said.

4. That all countries should disarm of their nuclear weapons is
required under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Israel, a very real threat to the Iranian people, has a massive arsenal of nuclear weapons. Besides Pakistan, it is the only nation in the Middle East to possess these evil weapons of war. Every nation that is putting pressure on Iran has nuclear weapons.
