Sensenbrenner finds a new group to fear: "flaming atheists"
OK, it was a throwaway line during a debate tonight between James Sensenbrenner and Bryan Kennedy held in a Synagogue in Fox Point, WI. The question he was answering had to do with whether faith based initiatives should have to abide by rules concerning discrimination. He said you shouldn't have to let a "flaming atheist" work in your faith community or something like that. The people around me were all snickering.

Kennedy got more applause and appreciation from the audience by a long shot. Of course a lot of his supporters came out to make it that way. A latino group came out together and sat dead center in front of Sensenbrenner. He seemed totally disconnected from the people in the room, and his answers just seemed to drone on. Towards the end, someone asked a direct question about why he had done so little to hold this administration accountable and he skirted the question. Kennedy followed up and basically explained the question to him, along with a reminder that there are different branches of government for the purpose of checks and balances, and maybe he should reread the constitution... he talked about getting rid of the culture of corruption in Washington and met the issues dead on.

Sensenbrenner insinuated that Kennedy promoted partial birth abortion and described it in nauseating detail, but I don't think there was anyone in this audience who would fall for that, even if they did in 2004 when it was used against Kerry.

Sensenbrenner doesn't try to annoy people, that's just who he is.

2. Sensenbrenner and Dubya: two of a kind
Petty, insecure, arrogant, partisan. Both helped to make our country what it is today.

5. Sensenbrenner kept saying that he wasn't afraid to disagree with Bush
and he gave one example, I can't remember what it was. Bryan held up one finger and nodded. Even Sensenbrenner gets that Bush is a loser but its probably much too late for him to distance himself.

20. The one example I've ever heard him say
No Child Left Behind. He says it is an unfunded mandate (but as Kennedy points out, it's only unfunded because the administration and Congress didn't fund it). He also says there were enough tests already to find out which kids are failing, and elections can hold the school boards accountable. Can't really argue with that. (By the way, he recited those three points practically verbatim at this debate and the one on the previous day. If you go to watch him enough you'll start to get deja vu all over again.)

However, I think Sensenbrenner (and many others) are good at figuring out a few things they can seem to be mavericks on because the bills will pass anyway. Then they'll have a nice example to trot out at a debate.

7. "Insensitivebrenner" has got to go.
I witnessed that basement hearing where he abruptly gaveled it closed stunning the audience, the democrats on the panel, and witnesses who wanted to say more.
A most disgusting pig of a man.
