US backing off democratizing the Middle East?

Oh, so imposing democracy at the point of a gun may not be such a good idea after all?

2. It is hard for me to believe that Democracy was ever really the plan
In Iran prior to 1979, we had a pro-western secular leader of a fanatically Shiite country. In Iraq we had a pro-western secular leader of a mixed muslim country. I would gladly go back to the Shah and Saddam (compared to what we have currently).
