Would you like the Republican Party to be completely eradicated |
|
or do you feel there is value in having two opposing parties? I think it is good to get an opposing viewpoint. It causes you to think. Two heads are better than one even if they differ IMO. While I am adamantly opposed to Slime and Corruption I still see value in opposing viewpoints. It is the Abuse of Power that I find absolutely unacceptable. A good leader will bring into their Administration opposing view for an all around viewpoint so as to make the best decisions. Clinton did that Lincoln did that but Republicans do not. Only Republican viewpoints are ever entertained and that is the main reason they are complete failures at governing. IMO It is their arrogance and it will be their downfall.

There's nothing wrong with a party that is truly "fiscally conservative".
Asking "Does the school really need a new boiler this year?" is a fine question as long as one is ready to accept as an answer "Yes, last year we spent $57,345 on maintaining the old one and the repair guy is already planning on buying a new boat on *THIS* year's upcoming further repair expenditures."
Everyone should care where the money comes from and where it goes and that we're making the best possible uses of it.
On the other hand, a party that spends its time keeping track of whether the right genders are sleeping with each other, or whether I'm on the phone talking about the Pres- ident, or tries to keep me from working at the same jobs as the men and earning the same pay for doing it is probably a party we'd be much better-off without.
So while there's clearly a place for a certain kind of Republican, there's really no need for the 2006-model Republicans.

like the Whigs ... "Gee, Dad ... did you ever hear of something called a Republican?"
"Yes, son. They were very corrupt, and they all got on big boats to sail off to find the new world ... a world where they could force their religion on simple folk ..."
Imagine the technology and the greatness that America could achieve without the "conservatives" exercising their definition and trying to eradicate progress ... in fact, trying to go uphill by throwing the car in reverse ...

a "footnote in history"-- way back around the Millenium a bunch of ultra-conservative thieves under a crazed leadership hijacked the Ship of State and drove it onto the rocks. A dark time. But the stunned and seasick people riding on this broken vessel eventually woke up and threw them overboard...
Thereafter the word "Republican" refers to the worst manifestation of greed and corruption in American history. Republicans = The most self-centered, irresponsible and degenerate party ever to control the United States.
They need to go back and reinvent the wheel. They're history.

Nixon, Ford, raygun, george the first and now king george have done more harm to this country than all our enemies throughout all of our hsitory combined.
They have no respect for the people of the country (except the very few super-wealthy), no respect for the Constitution, no respect for our military, no respect for the environment and no respect for the rest of the world.
They must be eradicated. It is a matter of the survival of our species.

|
Like other times in American history when a political party has foundered and then sunk (Whigs, anyone?).
I'm not sure a two-party system is viable anymore. With some modifications to the electoral college so you could actually elect a president (almost certainly a one-termer), a multiparty system (three, four, or more) might be more appropriate for the 21st Century.

|
They get to have us scream at each other, spend all of our eneries getting mad at each other, and they fleece each and every one of us of every last dollar, just to stay in power and get reelected and personally wealthier. It makes me so sick I can't put it into words.
I don't think it's a Republican or Democratic problem, I think it's corrupt two-party politics that few in either house or any of the three branches of government can seem to rise above.
That just blows me away to be honest.

I would like the Republican Party to be completely eradicated, and I feel there is value in having two opposing parties. There will always be a conservative party in a democracy, but I would like it to be eventually such that people are ashamed to admit that they ever were a part of the particular one we have now.

Liberals believe in shades of grey while Conservatives need a strict black or white...The Republican Party as it exists today should be eliminated but we need other parties. In my state (Alaska) there are six official Parties on every ballet. Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent, Green, and "Moderate Republican" (can you believe that last one) but at least there are alternatives...

More parties, with an electoral system that represents them adequately, would be better.
A one-party system, whether literally, or because one party has such a large majority as to be free from challenges to its power, can be very dangerous. It is better to have a bad opposition than no opposition.

And I'm definitely not kidding.
However, I have to say the following: 1. Conservatives, qua conservatives, are not bad. It's the thieving, the self-righteousness, the ignoring/demonizing contrary opinions, the cover-ups, and the glorification of violence at second hand that I don't like. And those are neither part of the conservative philosophy, nor part of what the Republican Party SAYS it stands for. 2. I think that above all else, I object to the simple unfairness that I see, and the lack of understanding of what that unfairness will bring. I'm not experiencing that unfairness myself nearly as much as others, both in the US and outside it, are; but it scares me to think what will happen to our society and our country if this continues. You can't nuke the whole f'in world, man. 3. The REAL problem, IMHO, starts with a mindset that says that because someone is good at making money, they deserve to run things. And because someone else is not, they deserve to die.

is the way to go. But we'd have to have something like instant runoff voting, so you'd never have to worry that your vote for a third party will help the candidate you oppose the most. So, yes, I am for many parties and if the Republicans are one of them, so be it. If we could also get publicly funded elections, I doubt the Republicans would have near the power and following they have today. Corruption is what keeps them going.

|
Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 08:15 PM by flaminbats
essentially it's the same question. Communists and Republicans both claim to support a small government which has minimal control over our lives. Both control an overbearing government with the power to police our lives and to leave any competition, political and economic, with no influence. Both claim to be advocates for the little guy while only being puppets of the powerful. Both claimed to be enemies of terrorism and Bin Laden, while using fear and violence to stay in power. Both supported organizations like the KGB, CIA and Department of Homeland Defense in the name of patriotism and defending the country. Both use these organizations to keep secrets from the voters and to imprison people without a fair trial. Both claim to be defenders of high morals and family values, but abuse the power of government and the working class for their own selfish reasons.
Banning the Republican Party would be no different than McCarthyism. But neither should either party become powerful enough to control every branch of the federal government. IMO democracy is a system without party registration, yet has a minimum of two active parties completely controlled by the voters.

68. Our two-party system has proved itself over time. |
|
While third parties are tolerated, we are better off having most people gravitate to one of the two major parties. Ideally one may champion liberal ideals and the other favor more conservative ideals. We need only look at the chaos generated by multiple parties in some European countries such as Italy to see how ineffective governments with multiple parties can be.
Having said that, the Republican party truly does need a thorough house cleaning (pun intended). Only by seeing that the voters repudiate what they have become will there be some real changes. They need to regain their position as a party of fiscal conservatives who also recognize the need to help people in need. At present they pander to the greedy who favor tax cuts for the wealthy and to hell with everybody else.
The Republicans also need to stop catering to wild-eyed radicals who want to impose their religious doctrines on all of us, restricting our freedoms and teaching religious belief in our schools in place of true science. People are sometimes slow to wake up to what is happening but when they do most voters will reject such a party and its politicians.
The Republican party has become an unstable coalition of the greedy, catering to big business, and of ignorant religious fundamentalists. It cannot long endure as such for these groups in fact despise each other. Let us have a Democratic landslide in 2006 and 2008. That is likely to cause the Republicans to purge themselves of radical extremists and return to a party that a sizeable group of people may support.
