44. Danforth has been critical of the Repugs co-opting religion...
snip from his Op-Ed "In the Name of Politics"...

I do not fault religious people for political action. Since Moses confronted the pharaoh, faithful people have heard God's call to political involvement. Nor has political action been unique to conservative Christians. Religious liberals have been politically active in support of gay rights and against nuclear weapons and the death penalty. In America, everyone has the right to try to influence political issues, regardless of his religious motivations.

The problem is not with people or churches that are politically active. It is with a party that has gone so far in adopting a sectarian agenda that it has become the political extension of a religious movement.

Camp Democracy Panel on War and the Media
Jeff Cohen, Ray McGovern, Robert Taicher, Jeff Norman
Watch now! - http://www.booktv.org/ram/feature/1006/btv100106_4.ram

Jeff Cohen and Ray McGovern talk about the corporate media's coverage of the Bush administration during the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq. They argue that the corporate media failed in its responsibility to ask tough questions and instead decided to largely act as cheerleaders for going to war. Jeff Cohen addresses this issue through his experience producing MSNBC's Phil Donahue's Show during this period and talks about why the show was cancelled just prior to the invasion. Ray McGovern, who worked as a CIA analyst for 27 years, discusses what the intelligence community was saying about Iraq prior to the war and talks about a confrontation he had with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld during an event in Atlanta this past May. After their presentations, writer/director Robert Taicher makes remarks about his new documentary "Rush to War" (www.rushtowar.com). The discussion is moderated by Take On the Media founder Jeff Norman (www.takeonthemedia.org).

Jeff Cohen founded the media watchdog group Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting in 1986. His latest book is "Cable News Confidential" (www.jeffcohen.org). Ray McGovern is co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) and is currently co-director of the Servant Leadership School in Washington, DC. Screwed: The Undeclared War Against the Middle Class -- And What We Can Do About It
Thom Hartmann

Air America talk radio host Thom Hartmann argues that government policies are endangering the middle class. He alleges that conservatives are creating rules and conditions that value corporations over people. The result, he claims, is the abandonment of health care and social policies that support the middle class policies put in place by the Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower administrations. Mr. Hartmann argues that the disappearance of these programs will cause the extinction of the middle class. Mr. Hartmann is joined by professor Mark Crispin Miller to answer questions during the Q&A. This event was hosted by Vox Pop Books in Brooklyn, New York.

Thom Hartmann hosts a nationally syndicated radio talk show on Air America. He is the author of "The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight: The Fate of the World and What We Can Do Before It’s Too Late;" "We the People: A Call to Take Back America;" "What Would Jefferson Do?," and "Unequal Protection: The Rise of Corporate Dominance and the Theft of Human Rights."

Cradle of Violence: How Boston's Waterfront Mobs Ignited the American Revolution
Russell Bourne
Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/history/0906/btv093006_1.ram

Russell Bourne argues that Boston's waterfront gangs were responsible for starting the tradition of anti-British resistance that eventually led to the American Revolution. The author details the Stamp Act riots of 1765 and the Boston Tea Party of 1773 and explains that the gangs' violent protests included tarring and feathering customs officials, burning a Lt. Governor's mansion, and fighting British soldiers in the streets. Mr. Bourne discusses his book at the Old South Meeting House in Boston, Massachusetts.

Russell Bourne has worked at Life magazine and as an editor at the Smithsonian and American Heritage Books. He is the author of "Americans on the Move: A History of Waterways, Railways and Highways," "Red King's Rebellion: Racial Politics in New England 1675-1679," "Rivers of America: Birthplaces of Culture, Commerce and Community" and "Gods of War, Gods of Peace: How the Meeting of Native and Colonial Religions Shaped Early America."

In his book, "The Senator and the Socialite: The True Story of America’s First Black Dynasty," author Lawrence Otis Graham tells the story of Blanche Bruce, who went from being a slave to becoming the first African-American to serve a full term in the US Senate. The book provides a 3-generation, 130-year view of race and politics in America. Mr. Graham discusses his book with Adam Clayton Powell III, director of the Integrated Media Systems Center at the University of Southern California. Mr. Powell is the son of civil rights leader, Rev. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., who was elected to the US House of Representatives from Harlem in 1945. The Politics of Disaster: Katrina, Big Government, and a New Strategy for Future Crises
Marvin Olasky
Watch now - http://www.booktv.org/ram/feature/1006/btv100706_4.ram

In a talk about his book, "The Politics of Disaster," Marvin Olasky argues that politicians use natural disasters for political gain rather than as an opportunity to improve the lives of victims. The author examines the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, suggests how to reform the national disaster policy, and examines policies that place disaster relief burdens on businesses and faith-based organizations, who he thinks are better equipped than the federal government to respond to disasters. He blames the government's current system of filing reports and lengthy paperwork for causing failures to get relief supplies to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Commonwealth Club in San Francisco hosted the event.

Marvin Olasky is a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin and the editor-in-chief of World, a national weekly news magazine written from a biblical perspective. He has written twenty books on history and cultural analysis, including "Abortion Rites," "The American Leadership Tradition," and "The Religions Next Door."

The End of Iraq: How American Incompetence Created a War Without End
Peter Galbraith

In a discussion about the book "The End of Iraq," author Peter Galbraith describes America's relationship with Iraq since the invasion in 2003. Mr. Galbraith argues that the U.S. invaded Iraq with the intention of bringing democracy to that country but instead caused a civil war. Mr. Galbraith says Iraq is breaking up into three segments: a pro-western Kurdistan in the north, an Iran-dominated Shiite entity in the south, and a chaotic Sunni Arab region in the center. Book & Books in Coral Gables, Florida hosted this event.

Peter Galbraith is a senior diplomatic fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation and performs work on conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction. As a former U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, Mr.Galbraith negotiated the 1995 Erdut Agreement that ended the war in Croatia. Previously, Galbraith was a professor specializing in national security strategy at the National War College. Mr. Galbraith holds an A.B. from Harvard College, an M.A. from Oxford University and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and is frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books.
