Religious right will stay home for election and here is why
Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 07:06 PM by Quixote1818
Too much tolerance for gay people in the Republican party.

I know a lot of us have suggested that the Republican base will still come out to vote even after the Foley scandal and the latest book scheduled to come out, but I really think they will stay home this time for one main reason. They hate gay people as much as anyone could hate anything and they see the Republican party now exposed as too tolerant of gays! They live and breath to stop the "homosexual agenda"! This prejudice runs so deep in their sick hearts that if they see the Republican party soft on this issue they will most certainly make a statement by not voting! This issue among all others is so powerful to them they are unwavering and not willing to look the other way. For this reason the Republican party is doomed this fall unless they can steal a few elections to keep them in power or unless they clean house and start throwing gay people out of the party. The Foley scandal was a major achilles tendon for the Republicans and it will be their demise!

3. Dam, and I even went to Google to check the spelling
The search didn't suggest a correction. Here is what came up:

7. Umm... to be precise it's really "Achilles heel"...
Actually, the old adage is Achilles heel, or vulnerable spot... see origins of myth here: http://www.wordexplorations.info/Achilles-heel-story.html

Achilles tendon is an anatomical part of the body, of course.

5. I think it's more likely because....
the GOP has repeatedly promised the Christian Right things it just can't produce: the rest of the country won't go along with it. And unrealistic people that they are, the Fundies feel betrayed. Shameless people that they are, the GOP keeps on making the promises.

6. Yep
They blew it. They had the gays by the balls and they blew it.

They couldn't win as dogcatcher now. The Congress should be about two-thirds dems, or my country's name ain't America.

8. I'm actually surprised by how many GOPers are gay.
I mean I knew there were a few...but from what we've seen in the past week it's more like 1 in 3.

9. And how many gays are GOP. WHY?
Why would you join a party that hates who you are at your core?

13. I have to disagree
Republicans are telling voters to vote for them because the alternative is much worse, all i hear now is "you don`t want see pelosi as speaker of the house, do you?"

Pelosi is the woman they are using now to scare the voters instead of hillary.

14. The Fear Factor
While I agree with your premise, I think some of our observations are premature. I think many fundies and those who want to live in denial see Foley as an isolated case...a bad apple. I've encontered some who feel Hastert and the others did no wrong...that Foley operated as some rogue and any "red flags" that may have come up were nothing more than conjecture...there wasn't any fire, just some smoke. To some who are offended by either the gay aspect or the cover-up, I'll say it's 50/50 if they'll stay home or look at their Congresscritter and absolve them of any blame in this incident.

Many of these people don't see the same news or reality we do. They live off the propaganda of a Hannity or Savage or Dobson and are still very suspect to the "sky is falling" game that is being spread about any Democcratic victory. They're hearing how Nancy Pelosi will allow NAMBLA to run the house, how every young girl will either be forced to have an abortion or become a lesbian and that any guy with brown skin and a beard wants to fly an airplane into your head. Hopefully there's enough who will stay home to swing the balance in some close races, but winning this way is by default, not from strength.

The real fall out comes in two years...and if there was ever a time for a Ross Perot-type "populist" to emerge it's now. While we're starting to see the crumbling of the Repugnican party, it won't really happen until they lose elections and start pointing fingers. Then watch the fundies reaction...especially if they're blamed for not "pulling their weight".
