My new hero: Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift.
The Navy lawyer who won the Supreme Court case, Rumsfeld v. Hamdan, representing the guy in Gitmo. Two weeks after winning Hamdan, and being named one of the 100 most influential lawyers in the U.S., the Navy denied him a promotion, meaning basically that he's fired. He was just on Countdown, says he's still representing Hamdan, no regrets, thinks the new military tribunal statute is unconstitutional, too. Very impressive guy.

8. Yes, me too. He quoted Thomas Payne saying that...
...how we treat our enemies is how we'll be treated eventually.

I'd like to have the exact words. I guess it will be in the "Countdown" transcript at the MSNBC website next week.

13. I think this was the quote...
He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from opposition; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach himself. -Thomas Paine

Through our represenatives.... This is a man that I would serve proudly under his leadership unlike that wannabe AWOL flyboy!

7. I hope that in 2008 he runs for the US House ...
...as a Democrat (I don't know his party.)

9. He should keep doing what he's doing --
which is skillfully representing people whose civil rights are being trashed and who desperately need representation but aren't getting it. We need more lawyers like that -- I hope he goes to work for the ACLU.

11. That would be good, too. Whichever he prefers.
But I'd like to have a Democratic Congress to stop laws from being passed which violate civil liberties in the first place.

10. I was quite impressed with him too.
And I admire him for sticking to the law, and fighting the Bush Cabal as they continue to try to sidestep it. He understands the consequences of how these "detainees" have been treated. It's too back the Bush Cabal doesn't understand, or doesn't care.

12. The Bush Administration does understand and does care.
They know that being able to violate the rights of people they accuse of being "enemy combatants" means more power for themselves and less for us.

That is the point.
