A day after a hot campaign debate in which Rep. John Doolittle said there was nothing unethical in his relationship with Jack Abramoff, a new e-mail surfaced Thursday indicating he was hoping his wife could go to work for the disgraced lobbyist as early as 2000.
The e-mail, part of a report released in Washington by the Democratic staff of the Senate Finance Committee, came as Doolittle and and his Democratic challenger, Charlie Brown, were dissecting the results of their Wednesday night slugfest.
Doolittle said he had not hit Brown hard enough on being a "chameleon liberal," while Brown said money has been pouring in to his campaign from new supporters since the event.
"After the debate, our online contributions went crazy," Brown said. He said many contributors commented that "Doolittle came off as a whining lunatic."
Yet Brown acknowledged that the two-hour debate, in which the Republican congressman hit him hard over his membership in the American Civil Liberties Union and for supporting gay marriage, might have cost him a "small slice" of GOP votes he was hoping to capture from Doolittle.
