Breaking: Mitt Romney (R) Under Federal Investigation
Breaking: Mitt Romney (R) Under Federal Investigation

Federal officials are probing scathing allegations that the Romney administration falsely claimed to conduct safety inspections in the Big Dig tunnel that collapsed and killed a woman in July.

The Securities and Exchange Commission is zeroing in on state financial documents from 2005 - cited in a new report by state Inspector General Gregory Sullivan - indicating that Gov. Mitt Romney was reviewing the safety of the Big Dig, when in fact the administration was only checking leaks in the Interstate 93 tunnel.

"Despite repeated assurances to bondholders, (MassHighway and Romney's Executive Office of Transportation) . . . did not inspect the I-90 connector tunnel section where the July 10, 2006, collapse occurred," Sullivan's report states. "It is clear that casual disregard for the truth was grossly inappropriate."

not to mention those who've already been convicted or indicted. The Republicans have systematic problem on their hands and they don't have any control over it anymore.

Otto Kerner, Dan Walker, George Ryan, and now a Dem whose hands don't look too clean--which is deeply disappointing. But when your best fundraiser just can't get home from the Middle East for an arraignment on bribery charges, that looks kind of bad.

44. No, it's the SEC
Says so in the second paragraph of the article. The SEC is kind of slow with their investigations. They are the ones investigating Frist. As far as I know it, that is still dragging on. Still, every scandal helps and this is a horrible one - one death, $15B lost, immeasurable inconvenience and aggravation for the entire city of Boston.

brand of love he has condemned in a potential prison situation.
Horrible that somebody died.
Why, when a republican is accused of something (especially corruption) I immediately conclude there is guilt and that no amount of money will be spent to get him (usually him) off.

28. He sold himself to voters as a 'moderate' rethug, which was a total lie
Once he was safely sworn in as governor, he ripped off his mask, and was revealed as the evil neo-con he really is.

I never bought his 'moderate' act for a second. But enough voters to elect him did believe it. Most people here despise him now.

have enough experience with "good Mormons". Being moderate is completely incompatible with being a "good Mormon" politician. They are religious fascists of the most extreme sort. Total theocrats, and liars to boot. NEVER think otherwise. NEVER let them fool you.

And NO, Harry Reid isn't one of them. He's a "jack Mormon". Like a "Christmas Christian", lol.

Mass had developed a pretty dysfunctional state government after some years of one party rule. Weld was an OK repub governor in the beginning. In the end the Republican governors turned out to be no real check on the legislature at all. The legislature has gotten a lot better on its own now that some of the old time polls have left. Romney is totally useless - except for self promotion. He is close with Andy Card --Bush's long-time chief of staff.

I hope this controversy really does hurt his chances, but I think it will take more than this. He has one of the best Teflon - coatings I have seen since Reagan. When the Republicans like Tony Snow, George Allen, and Trent Lott were doing there little racial digs this summer Romney made a "tar-baby" comment about the big dig and it was barely noticed at all.

In Mass, like everywhere else, 90% of the AM talk shows are right-wing. They say 30% of people get their news from radio, so Republicans get a lot of free propaganda.

36. I was on a plane a few weeks ago, and sitting next to me...
was a guy looking at a file on his computer called "Big Dig." Okay, I peeked, those seats are cramped. :)

He was reading some kind of safety policy document, presumably about the Big Dig project, and as he read through it, he started saying under his breath, "Oh no," "Oh my God!" and "Oh, shiiiiiitt....".

He seemed to just be stunned by what he was reading, and he closed the file and opened some nice photos of landscapes and flowers, which seemed to relax him.

I couldn't figure out if he was a lawyer or a safety inspector. Or maybe he works in Romney's office and was worried about his boss.

As someone else said, it would funny except that someone died.
