Mehlman is on CNN tomorrow before or after Dean. Wonder what he will have to say. I would not go on there myself...but I guess they will pound Howard with hard questions and give Mehlman softball.

"Abramoff, White House Tied to Firing of Official
By Peter Wallsten, Times Staff Writer

Washington -- For five years, Allen Stayman wondered who ordered his removal from a U.S. State Department job negotiating agreements with tiny Pacific island nations -- even when his own bosses wanted him to stay.

Now he knows.

The ax fell after intervention by one of the highest officials at the White House: Ken Mehlman, who acted on behalf of one of the most influential lobbyists in town, Jack Abramoff.

E-mails recently made public disclose that Abramoff, whose client list included the Northern Mariana Islands, had long opposed Stayman's work advocating labor reforms in that U.S. commonwealth, and considered what his lobbying team called the "Stayman project" a high priority.

"Mehlman said he would get him fired," an Abramoff associate wrote after meeting with Mehlman, who was then White House political director"

6. Be sure to read all of the article...very damning.
Makes me wonder how he can stand to put himself on TV tomorrow unless he has been assured nicey poo questions.

"Mehlman, a Baltimore native and graduate of Harvard Law School, has remained a GOP power player since stepping down as political director in 2003. He built the party's highly effective grass-roots get-out-the-vote strategy, managing President Bush's 2004 re-election campaign before taking over the RNC last year.Democrats charge that Mehlman might have acted unethically during his time at the White House, lobbying for government actions at Abramoff's behest, even when policy experts disagreed with the decision.

The senior Democrat on the House Government Reform Committee, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., points to e-mails suggesting that, in the midst of negotiations over whether to fire Stayman, Mehlman requested and might have been given two tickets in Abramoff's suite at the former MCI Center arena (now the Verizon Center) to a sold-out U2 concert in June 2001."

Then read page 2 as well.

7. Agreed.
I think that Dean should ambush him. He has to know about this by now.

8. But the pattern is...
Dean gets one loaded question after the other while Kenny gets asked easy stuff. Dean does well under the circumstances, but he seldom gets a chance to attack.

Fingers crossed, he will tomorrow.

9. If Dean raises the subject and says that he wants to know about it on live
television, they will have to ask him about it. And it will totally throw their interview off-message. He should lead with it, without pausing for breath at the close of his first answer.

10. You've got to be fucking kidding me.
I can't believe more people aren't interested in this. This is a quid pro quo of favors (likely an illegal firing) for gifts (U2 box seats) that puts the sitting RNC chairman on the hot seat, with quite a bit of evidence.

Why aren't people responding to this? Can someone please get this a much needed 5th recommendation?

:kick:

17. And he lied about it on CNN today.
To Wolf's credit, he did ask the questions. But when Mehlman lied, he sort of let it slide by.

13. Well, he has the nerve to be on CNN today.
Now that is gutsy.

I just fear Dean will have to stick to talking points, wish he would be less scripted...but if he were the rest of the party would jump down his throat about it.

16. why does it take nerve - he just lies - like always and believes
that noone would ever dare to question him. Doesn't take nerve - just a profound lack of conscience and character. But taking money (for the Wh/party) to do favors for cronies ... that takes nerve and a profound lack of conscience and character.

18. "Mehlman said he would get him fired,"
And Mehlman today on CNN said he did not. Hope they are investigating. He's got this going on and that NH phone jamming deal as well.

It is amazing how they keep all this out of the news, and we forget all about it.
