One more reason to avoid going to McDonald's |
|
In light of recent revelations that McDonald's buys tomatoes through at least one convicted slaver, a farmworkers' group is urging the company to change its ways.
Since 1997, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) -- a community group from Southern Florida representing thousands of farmworkers -- has uncovered, investigated and helped to prosecute six separate slavery cases. In 2003, three CIW members were awarded the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award for their work in liberating over 1,100 individuals involuntarily held in agricultural work camps along the East Coast.More here at Alternet.

I'll never eat there or any fast food burger joint again.

That was reason enough for me. I've probably got fries under my car seats from 5 years ago that look the same as ones "prepared" today. Ewwww...

5. I haven't eaten at one of those places in 30 years |
|
because the last time I did, I could feel the grease oozing out of every pore. That stuff may be addictive, but when you're not used to it, it's pretty nasty stuff.
"Supersize Me" would have cured me if I did still eat fast food, though. Barfing up his first supersized dinner should have told him and everyone else something.

4. gods, you know you're evil when Wal Mart is more humane than thee |
|
-snip-
Yet, McDonald's -- despite the fact that last year Ag-Mart received notice of 457 pesticide violations from North Carolina and Florida agricultural officials (along with fines totaling $294,500) and was subject to state investigations after severe birth defects were found in three babies born to its farmworkers -- continues to buy tomatoes through Ag-Mart. Even the notoriously anti-labor Wal-Mart has reacted by terminating its tomato purchases from Ag-Mart.

9. Our local Walmart has a McDonald's inside |
|
so Walmart doesn't mind cashing McDonald's rent checks and sharing customers. FWIW, I haven't been inside a Walmart in years. I've boycotted them since the early 90's.

OK, I confess! I eat there about 3 times a year. And I hate myself after I do.
