No Terrorists in Hawaii, only a 6.7 Earthquake this morning
Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 12:50 PM by symbolman
We just got hit in the Hawaiian Islands with a 6.7 Earthquake -- Centered at the side of Kona on the Big Island..

I've been up all night and had just walked out for a smoke when it hit, thought I was dreaming being so tired, then realized that the crunching concrete and rocking cars was REAL, as the earth was swaying under my feet.

I ran inside and got my wife and 20 month old and hit the car, tried the radio in the car to see what had happened and there was NO RADIO at all, talk about your "Omega Man" moment.

I actually DID think about a Terrorist Hit, til my wife discovered we still have internet.

ALL the power is out and I mean ALL.

Now I know what an attack would be like, time to prepare for it, hadn't thought about it way out here in Hawaii, one of the reasons I moved here, to get as far away from a major city, and the outer edges of the Busholini Empire.

Nothing to fret over now, except to hope that the Tsunami Warning Horns and their own power supply.

Pele can be a BITCH, and she's been cranky lately -- wish us luck!

63. Symbolman - have you checked for gas leaks?
My husband is on the Marin County Search and Rescue and I'm part of the Emergency Response Team. Most important thing right now is for you to check for any gas leaks. Go also and make sure any objects haven't been loosened that could fall down with any aftershocks on you or your house. This includes tree branches and trees, antennas on roof etc. or objects on shelfs in your house.

Secure fresh water. Hopefully you had fresh water in bottles already stored, but be aware that the water treatment plants that depend on power may have been shut down. It could be days without power and safe/fresh water. If you are getting water in your pipes, its better to use that only for cooking. Remember that the water in your water heater is good to drink.

Since power may be down for awhile, you should plan to start eating everything out of your fridge. Cook up the meats etc. on a grill if you can.

Once your family is secured, go throughout the neighborhood with some neighbors and check on the neighbors. There may be older people or disabled who need help.

Let us know if there is anybody here on the Mainland we can call for you to report to that your okay. :hi:

You and the family okay? Holy schmoly Symbolman, I didn't realize you were in Hawaii now...your about the 10th person I know about having moved there recently...we were just there in August visiting friends who moved there.

Give us reports when you can. Are you taking care of making sure you have fresh water available? Water Treatment plants can go offline for days with something like this. Don't forget your water heater tank is full with H2O!!!

34. That's weird. Earthquakes only HAVE one official magnitude.
It's independent of where the observer is.

Different locations shake more or less based on how close to the epicenter, but an actual earthquake has only one epicenter and one magnitude (takes a while for them to calculate it - early reposrt are always estimates).

38. Each island has it's own seismic activity measurment systems so
they are probably just reporting what they measured. Eventually they will locate epicenter and figure out what it was.

Right now symbolman reports it was off the Big Island near Kona. Active volcano there too!

45. The worst part about it all is the total feeling of helplessness
having to take what comes and no control - just dealing with what is left after it all settles down.

If you can make it to a store, buy a solar shower - they come in mighty handy when the power is down for weeks on end, matter of fact, I recommend everyone own one, damn the plastic and duck tape.

Cool and safe thoughts to you, love ya!

After 10 years in Alaska I don't get too shook about these things. I spent so much time in the Bush there that I was pretty thrilled to walk into a room (the bathroom) and have HOT water just come flying out of the wall, how little we appreciate he Little things until we don't have them..

I can skin a rat, no problem, rewire a generator, build an outhouse and get water out of dirt with a piece of saran wrap, a cup and a stone :)

No moose here tho, damn!

66. Looks like it was near Kailua....
If your batteries are running low, please let us know if you need someone to call anyone on the mainland. Save the battery if you can.

Meanwhile - look at my other posts about what you need to check on about gas leaks, objects that may pose a hazard and securing fresh water. There will be rushes at stores for food, so hopefully you have enough food for your family for atleast 3 days. Power could be out for awhile and you need to be prepared. Also, once your family is secured, make sure with other neighbors that you check on the neighborhood. There may be disabled or older people who need help. Some may be in shock. Don't know if you know first aid, but this is extremely important to identify and help people. Also, sometimes if someone has been injured, something as simple as tilting their head back and making sure their airpassages have been cleared can help them survive.

Appreciate the tips!

51. First Northridge, then this
This one wasn't as bad as Northridge (I was there and the water FELL out of my toilet). Lots of rolling going on. Hopefully all will quiet down and the power will come back on soon...

Thing that scared me the most as I was laying in bed was wondering if we'd have to drive upcountry to avoid a tsunami. Fortunately there is no tsunamis expected.

They told me Hawaii only gets little earthquakes!

Oahu is far enough away they should have had less shaking... hope everyone is well.

56. Hey Demobabe...I was in the Marina on 10/17/89 - I remember too how hard
it was at night to sleep in bed with all the aftershocks....

Who knows when our next one is coming, especially with all the talk of the "Big One"....

I have been wondering when the Ring of Fire might start acting up.... :scared:

73. I was in downtown SF
When that one hit. I'm not particularly fearful of earthquakes, I was in my car. At first I thought that someone was trying to tip it over! I realized it was an earthquake, and then kind of laughed and said 'Cool Earthquake'..

Then I looked back over the city towards the ocean and I saw dust rising... and that really got to me somehow, and I realized that it was 'a big one'.

I spent most of that evening taxi-ing folks around the city, because no one could call a cab, and people got stuck everywhere.

It took forever to get home later on, all streets heading towards the only open bridge: Golden Gate, so I tried some side roads (in the Marina), and it was bizzare! The streets were buckled

The strangest sight was driving up the waldo grade once I finally got across the bridge, and I saw the entire bay area in darkness, with the moon shining on the bay. It was something I'll never forget.

89. Where in the Marina?
We lived a block from Moscone Park and the fires on Beach St. burned my eyes. I stayed up until the fires were put out w/the Bay water by one of those old mothballed water boats.

I was awakened the next morning when the Red Cross helicopters began to land in the park.

94. Hawaii isn't supposed to do this.
This is an odd quake. The one I'm really afraid of is the one where a chunk of island cracks off and plunges into the ocean. That's supposed to cause a 1000' tsunami within minutes.

I was in Santa Monica during the Northridge quake. Got hit real hard because of some parabolic rock formation under the city that focused the earthquake waves and killed lots of buildings there. Walked out of my apartment at 5 am and walked around and saw tall buildings with X fractures between all the windows - talk about scary. Half of the water had spilled out of the swimming pool.

There was an electric buzz that was in the air for days after as if the whole earth was angry, and I shuddered every time a heavy truck thundered by.

I was really lucky - I cringed seeing those buildings in Northridge where entire floors of apartments pancaked on floors below killing all inside. So many people I knew left LA after that.

The volcano here has been going off a lot lately - I don't know if that's the cause of the seismic activity - but I'd always heard the earthquakes were minimal here.

On KKCR, and are now back to playing classical music (Pavariti)

I think a lot of people on Oahu are without power too (which would explain why I couldn't get to the Honolulu Star Bulletin)

Best wishes, my mother lived on Kaui when Iniki hit, and I was beside myself trying to get info about the situation there. 12 days without word from her, I was out of my mind with worry.

71. Even after all this passes
.... and it will, I still highly advise KKCR, it is a progressive station. they do Classical like this on the weekends, but early morning (I'm on the pacific coast), they do play authentic hawaiian music, and then the rest of the time is a mix-up of all genres, from old old classic rock to jazz, and modern youth music. You can catch Democracy Now as well as other progressive programs as well.

My mother (who now lives in Tennessee) is a diehard listener, when the floods were happening on Kauai, KKCR was the best source of info for us.

83. First glad you and your family are okay and
secondly..SURF'S UP!

"On Hawaii Island, also known as the Big Island, there was some damage in Kailua-Kona and landslide along a major highway, said Gerard Fryer, a geophysicist at the Pacific Tsunami Center.

Betsy Garties, who lives in North Kohala, on the northern tip of Hawaii Island said she was lying in bed with one of her two young children when the quake struck.
"First I heard a rumbling. Then the house started to shake. Then broken glass," Garties said. She first stood under a door frame as safety experts advise, then found that too wobbly for comfort and ran into the yard.

"It was strong enough that it was wobbling, so you almost lost your balance running out into the yard," Garties said. "The house was visibly rocking."

Power at least partially knocked out on every island, said Civil Defense spokesman Lani Goldman. On Oahu, 95 percent of customers were without power, he said."

84. The Story of Pele

Pele theFire Goddess:
Haumea waiting for her child to be born, was told by the elders of her village that a "spirit child" will be born to you on a night when the earth shakes, lighting splits the sky and thunder rolls down the valley. That night arrived and Haumea went into a cave and came forth with a child. They named her Pelehonuamea.

Pele was different from her brothers and sisters. She would not play with them in the water. Her uncle, Lonomakua was the "keeper of the flame". he knew all of the secrets of fire, but till now had no one to pass this knowledge to. When Pele was a few days old, he saw the reflection of fire in her eyes.

The island Pele and her village were living on was being consumed by frequent volcanic eruptions. The villagers and Pele's jealous sister Namaka blamed Pele and Lonomakua for this. Banished from the island, Pele and some of her sisters and brothers, who loved her, sailed away. The amakua (guardian) shark god Kamohoali'i safe guarded Pele's journey. Lonomakua gave Pele a magic stick "Pa'oa" to help her find fire at her new home. Her mother gave Pele a magic egg.

For many months Pele followed a star from the northeast, which shown brighter than the rest, and migrated toward it. One morning, Pele awoke to the smell of something familiar in the air. In the distance could be seen a high mountain with a smoky haze hiding its peak. Pele knew she had found her new home. She named the island Hawai'i.

Pele, carrying her magic stick Pa'oa, went up to the mountain where a part of the earth collapsed into the ground. She and placed the stick into the ground. Pele called this place Kilauea. Inside the Kilauea Crater was a large pit. She named it Halema'uma'u, maumau being the fern jungle surround the volcano. Halema'uma'u would be her new home.

There was a fire God living on Kilauea named 'Ailaau (forest-eater). He and Pele both wanted Kilauea for their home. They started throwing fire balls at each other causing considerable damage. 'Ailaau fled and still hides in the caverns under the earth. Pele alone would rule the Island of Hawai'i. The people of the island loved and respected the Goddess Pele. The egg her mother gave Pele hatched into a beautiful girl. Pele named her new sister, Hi'iaka'i-ka-poli-o-Pele (Hi'iaka of the bosom of Pele). Kamohoali'i, the shark god taught Hi'iaka the art of surfing.

Pele fell in love with a man she saw in a dream. His name was Lohi'au, a chief of the island of Kaua'i. Pele sent her sister Hi'iaka to fetch Lohi'au on Kaua'i to bring him back to Hawai'i to live with Pele. Hi'iaka would have fourty days to bring Lohi'au back or Pele would punish the girl by hurting Hi'iaka's girl friend Hopoe. Upon reaching Kaua'i, Hi'iaka found Lohi'au dead. She quickly rubbed his body with herbs and chanted to the Gods for help; bringing the young chief of Kaua'i back to life. Grateful for Hi'iaka's help, Lohi'au agreed to return with her to the Big Island.

The fourty days had passed. Pele suspected that Hi'iaka and Lohi'au had fallen in love and were not coming back. In her fury, Pele caused an eruption which turned Hopoe into stone. On here return to Hawai'i with Lohi'au, Hi'iaka found Hopoe, a statue in stone. Hi'iaka, filled with sadness and anger decided to take revenge. Leading Lohi'au to the edge of the Halema'uma'u crater where Pele could see them, Hi'iaka put her arms around Lohi'au and embraced him. Furious, Pele covered Lohi'au with lava and flames.

The two sisters, anger subsided, were remorseful. One lost a friend the other a lover. Pele decided to bring Lohi'au back to life to let him choose which sister he would love. Pele was sure Lohi'au would choose her. Lohi'au chose Hi'iaka. Pele, with aloha, gave the two lovers her blessing and Hi'iaka and Lohi'au sailed back to Kaua'i.

Pele still lives on Hawai'i where she rules as the fire Goddess of the volcanoes. The smell of sulphur reminds the natives that she is still there in her home, Halema'uma'u. Her fiery lava building a new island to the south, still submerged, named Loahi.

The people of Hawai'i still melo o Pele (sing and chant for Pele) and Kilauea.

"E ola mau, e Pele e!
'Eli'eli kau mai!"
Long life to you, Pele

85. In case you're wondering. I'm at Mom's in NYC at present
back Wednesday evening, I presume.

We have had a lot of small ones this year, in unusual places like off Moloka'i. Small to medium-size quakes are fairly common near Kilauea volcano, but this is on the other side of that island, and in any case is quite large for Hawai'i. Bear in mind we obviously do not have the kinds of seismic codes that California has; note report of possible "structural integrity prolems" at Kona Hospital (the only one over there) :scared:

96. Just wanted to THANK one and all
for their support, tips, news, historical views, myth sharing.. "Pele CAN be a bitch, she needs virgins like we need Starbucks" :)

You've made us feel better and safer when we had NO contact with even ANY local stations from ANY Island.. felt like the Omega man this morning, like the end of the world.

You should SEE the cracks in ALL the concrete surrounding our building, wonder if I can hit up FEMA for getting that fixed, we have water pipes running through the concrete around our home.

I still have no Idea WHAT FEMA DOES, because all I've ever heard were nothing but horror stories.

Anyway, thanks to my family (Ohana) here at the DU, good to know we have friends looking out for us.

We tried to call Opi but only got a message, but I'm fairly sure he'll be okay, from what we know about his history, he's VERY well trained for this kind of thing, probably out there assisting others, and that's why we can't get through to him.

DU is OHANA, and No KA OI, much like Maui (Like Maui No KA OI - translation, "Maui is THE BEST" )...

These DAMN (D) Earthquakes, we'll have to vote them out :) Thanks Fox News.

I appreciate each and everyone of you, and if I don't PM you right away in the next few days or week it might be from aftershocks - this is the biggest Earthquaked I've experienced in my life, glad there's so little loss of life.
