OMG Bolton is a TOTAL Embarrassment and Danger to this Country

<snip>

Her remarks that she was “quite certain” China would live up to its responsibilities countered an earlier statement by Wang Guangya, Chinese ambassador to the UN, who said China did not approve of inspecting cargo to and from North Korea and urged restraint from “provocative steps”.

John Bolton, the US ambassador to the UN, emphasised that China had a “heavy responsibility” to influence Pyongyang. In response to a question about China’s trade with North Korea, Mr Bolton said it would be “powerfully persuasive” if China moved to cut off food and energy supplies to its neighbour.

Mr Bolton also said on ABC’s This Week that the supposed nuclear test performed by North Korea last week “had to have been humiliating to China”.

“After all of the efforts they’ve made over the years to protect North Korea, for the North Koreans in the face of all that to test had to get quite a reaction in Beijing. And I think we’re still seeing that play out.”

...This Jackass has no clue! The test was humiliating to the U S A! The US made this happen. Or if you like, let it happen on purpose.

5. I heard that Bush will re-appoint him during THIS recess, as in deja vu,
all over again.

It's the first time I've ever heard of any President doing it.

The Senate wouldn't confirm him already, it's clear they will NOT confirm him. People don't like him: only Bush and his ilk, as he gleefully does their hatchet work.

8. I think Rice and Bolton have no credibility in the eyes of the world.
They are huffing-and-puffing empty suits, the both of them. They are performing a meaningless charade and the world (and they, I bet) know it.

11. "if If China moved to cut off food and energy supplies
to its neighbour." Bolton

That has been the Busholini Regime Plan all along.

They want to starve the people of NK in order to bring about an NK colapse.

14. I think Bolton is looking to cause Japan to militarize
Edited on Sun Oct-15-06 02:52 PM by teryang
This comment reveals no appreciation for China or Russia's position. Cutting off food and energy means famine. Famine means forced dislocation of North Korea's population to China and Russia. This is exactly what they seek to avoid. The sanctions do not call for cutting off food and energy. South Korea delivers both as well.

Frankly, I expect the Chinese to ignore the sanctions. If the Japanese think they can stop Chinese ships on the high seas, they are just looking for trouble.

China should not have agreed to the resolution as written providing for interdiction, they obviously don't agree with it, but they have now sanctioned it. The US would have done it anyway.

The truth is that there is no effective way to interdict commerce passing through China or Russia. We couldn't stop it during the Vietnam war, how are we going to do it now?

I fully expect Kim to detonate a second device, if he has one. China may be motivated to try to remove Kim as a solution but such plots will only aggravate the instability in the area rather than relieve it.

15. The people in NK have already been starved.
snip>
North Korea, one of the world's most centrally planned and isolated economies, faces desperate economic conditions. Industrial capital stock is nearly beyond repair as a result of years of underinvestment and shortages of spare parts. Industrial and power output have declined in parallel. Despite an increased harvest in 2005 because of more stable weather conditions, fertilizer assistance from South Korea, and an extraordinary mobilization of the population to help with agricultural production, the nation has suffered its 11th year of food shortages because of on-going systemic problems, including a lack of arable land, collective farming practices, and chronic shortages of tractors and fuel. Massive international food aid deliveries have allowed the people of North Korea to escape mass starvation since famine threatened in 1995, but the population continues to suffer from prolonged malnutrition and poor living conditions. Large-scale military spending eats up resources needed for investment and civilian consumption. In 2004, the regime formalized an arrangement whereby private "farmers markets" were allowed to begin selling a wider range of goods. It also permitted some private farming on an experimental basis in an effort to boost agricultural output. In October 2005, the regime reversed some of these policies by forbidding private sales of grains and reinstituting a centralized food rationing system. In December 2005, the regime confirmed that it intended to carry out earlier threats to terminate all international humanitarian assistance operations in the DPRK (calling instead for developmental assistance only) and to restrict the activities of international and non-governmental aid organizations such as the World Food Program. Firm political control remains the Communist government's overriding concern, which will likely inhibit the loosening of economic regulations.
