I lived in Hawaii for years. Damn.

Here's the live stream. A lot of damage on the Big Island, Oahu.

1. I lived on Kaua'i for years...
...my daughter and her family live on Maui. Phones are either out or tied up.

3. CNN

is broadcasting live coverage from Oahu and they've been giving constant updates. I heard the road to Hana is closed by boulders; electricity is out on Maui. Landslides on Kauai. Seems to be the best source at the moment - though the Honolulu Advertiser is keeping lists of updates on the front page.

I hope Opi's okay! Wish he'd let us know.

edited for spelling and to add that I saw an internet post from Molokai that didn't indicate much damage where the poster was.

4. Me too...I lived on Kauai from July '92 to
July '98 and my son has lived there since '85. He has some property on the Big Island, Hilo side and he's been watching closely the rumblings of Madame Pele.

I haven't seen anything about Kauai in all this..was wondering if it was too far North to be affected?

5. Just heard on the live stream (KITV) that they received several calls
from Kauai and they're not having any significant problems.

I'd imagine you're right about Kauai's location in relation to the Big Island.

Good news. I hope that the news from Molokai is as heartening. :-) MKJ

6. Thanks for all of this, BHP!
My sister just called me cause she heard of an earthquake on the Big Island and wondered if my son was okay.

It's sweet how family and friends reach out when they think one of their own might be in harm's way. :)

7. Reporting in from Maui
The earthquake was dramatic here, but was just a lot of rolling. Not much damage at all here, and another poster said their relatives on Oahu slept through the quake, so I really doubt Kauai would have felt much of anything. I know the power went off on Oahu, too.

I'm sure the power went off on Molokai as it has been on Maui - it finally came on here.

The worst damage was on the Big Island, and honestly, after surviving the Northridge quake, what I've seen doesn't even compare.

I think a hospital sustained the worst damage on the Big Isle - other than that some structural damage to buildings over there.

10. Thanks, CW...
The worst of it for us was trying to live without air conditioning for five hours... the horror! :)

Hope everyone on the Big Island is doing okay - some injuries reported now, still no deaths yet.

9. I love Hawaii, my deepest sorrow for all those suffering.
The only real place I have ever taken vacations to is Hawaii, my family has a special bond with those magical islands.
