However David's father Yohane said he was 'ecstatic' with the news that David had finally left Malawi.

1. Anyone who writes NUFF SAID
is getting a little carried away with the sound of his/her own voice.

We don't need people to start a thread, and then decide there's no more to say after the opening post.

5. I never cared for the expression, and regarded it much as you do.
Though I never really thought about WHY. I just thought of it as obnoxious, but really, it's like saying "And fuck you, and your lousy opinion, because I hold all the cards and make the decisions."

It's almost like declaring, well...I'm the DECIDER!!!

That said, I'm guessing African is this decade's Chinese, Russian, or Eastern European.

Wish every American kid had a permanent, loving home. They aren't in fashion so much, this season. Not sufficiently exotic, perhaps?

Eventually, though, we might be sufficiently "third world" for, say, future wealthy Chinese to come and pluck away infants from our poor and struggling population.

6. Child could be developmentally impaired by 18 mo. wait in poverty
I have friends stationed in Malawi with US AID and conclude from their descriptions that there is not a more impoverished country in the world. At present, their laws require an 18 month residency in the country before anyone can adopt a child. This is designed to prevent people from "adopting" children for the purpose of using them as slaves. That is a reasonable position. The country is to poor to pay for follow up visits outside the country's borders to check on the welfare of adopted children. On the other hand, the conditions in orphanages in such a desperately poor country have got to be substandard re medical care, food and shelter. Many of their orphans are HIV positive or have AIDS.

I think that the adoptive parents may well have saved this little boy's life by not waiting the 18 months, and I'm sure that he will be a healthier, stronger child for getting excellent nutrition, health care, and individual attention from his new family.

7. There is a better choice
Instead of taking him from his heritage, country and family, why didn't she use some of the millions she has, to establish a home for his father and grandmother so he could retain all those important things.
She is just jealous cause Angelina Jolie has received good PR. Madonna is a selfish egotist. She doens't care what's best for the boy; she just wants to try to look good. This child wasn't even an orphan.

Father said:
“I suppose deep in my heart I always imagined that when he was better, or I had another wife, I would go and take him back. I did not think anyone would want to take him away for good.”

Yohane cycled 25miles to visit David in the orphanage when he could: “I would bring him food from my garden then sit and play with him for a while. I wanted him to know I was his father, that I love him very much. He is my only child still living and I think of him as a gift from God. He is also the best memory I have left of my wife.”

“I suppose I don’t have any say in what happens to him now. He will always be in my heart. I hate to see him leave Malawi but I have come to accept the loss.”

“It has all been very crazy. Everything has happened so fast. I can’t believe what is happening.”

8. I agree. That's what I would do if I had the money.
I think Madonna could have done better than this.

On the other hand, it just so fits in with her style of creating controversy. And because of the controversy more people are interested in reading about it and more likely to become aware of the poor living conditions in Malawi. I never gave Malawi 2 seconds thought before and lately I've been thinking about it a lot because of Madonna.

I read a quote from one of the citizens there who counseled the father about his son being adopted. He said it would be a good thing because he would be educated and could then come back to Malawi and help them figure out how to better their living conditions!

That was sad to read and it made me want to do something to help them. I'm hoping that people who have resources that I don't feel the same way and this whole debacle ends up being a blessing for the people and especially the children living there. As of now the orphanage doesn't have enough money for adequate food supplies for their children and the orphans don't get enough to eat.

Very sad.

So to make a long story short. Maybe what Madonna is doing is actually quite brilliant, whether she consciously knows it or not.

9. Agree with you...
though I was slammed for saying as much in another thread the other day.

What I'm seeing is a self centered and superficial star wanting to make a statement in an extreme way rather than considering ALL the implications of her actions.

For me it all boils down to why couldn't Madonna adopt a child that is a true orphan-one that has no parents alive? And why couldn't she wait and go through the proper channels as others were required to do? Shopping IS what it sounds like.
